Double Nickles

Today, saw 55 cultivators in bloom and nearly 100 degrees. It’s too hot to enjoy them before the fizzle in the dry heat. I savor my picture taking time because it forces me to pay attention. I’m done with the endless heat and no rain.

My Instagram reel for today has 4 cultivators, but only 3 were new. Previously, I misidentified Wild Rose Fandango as Chokecherry Mountain. I realized today when Chokecherry Mountain bloomed. In order: Prelude to Love, Chokecherry Mountain, Santa Fe Christmas and Wild Rose Fandango.

It’s That Time, Again

It’s daylily season, so I spend a fairly significant amount of time photographing and posting about my daylilies. I love my daylilies but I admit to getting a but burned out on all the posting chores during the peak. Still, my blooms only look good for a couple hours in this dry heat. The photos give me something to savor for a long time to come. PS if you have noticed shorter blogs and reels vs photos that’s why.

Today, only 3 cultivators opened for the first time this year. Cultivators in order: Moon Over Chimayo, Happy Hopi, and Fooled Me.

And, the Peak Goes On

The peak continues to pop, but only 4 had first blooms for ’23 today. I have a several mid bloomers with young scapes and I keep wondering how this weird season will end.

The hot, dry weather continues here. The daylilies are popping and I had 10 cultivators with their first bloom of the year today. And, I’ve had 100 total cultivators bloom this season.

I can’t even tell you how many I have total. Probably 170-180. I added, Mother Nature subtracted. Plus, I just got a new computer and I haven’t moved my daylily software over yet. Too busy counting flowers on my wall.

Another Peakish Day

It was another peakish in the daylily garden. Not as many first blooms for 2023 as yesterday (or last year), but a decent number. It’s too late to catch-up to last year, but this hot weather is doing its darnedest.

I feel a little sad for my desert daylilies when it’s so hot and dry. They like the South or humid areas with rain much better. Blooms are so faded and look like melted wax by noon in so many. I’m not saying I don’t love them but the reason I take so many photos is to savor the blooms at their best without cooking myself in the sun.

We had a little monsoon today. Let’s hope the rains are back for the season. Short, intense, unpredictable but cooling and all moisture helps.

A Mountain Peak in Kansas

Peak this year is going to be more of a Kansas Peak than a Colorado Peak. So many plants either succumbed to the prolonged freeze-thaw or they just didn’t put out scapes. Many early bloomers seem to be missing, but my garden is trying.

I came home from camping to 15 new cultivators in bloom for the first time in 2023. Here is my Instagram reel from today.

Fizzle, Not Sizzle

It’s mid-July. I’m usually overwhelmed and a little exhausted from peak season. Not this year. I’ve only had over 30 on one day yesterday) and only had 2 first blooms for 2023 today. It feels like a fizzle this year – like it did when I had half as many daylilies.

Anyway, today’s first blooms were Lime Frost and a NOID that was mislabeled as Fringe Benefit. Just photos today, no reel.

A Little Steam

Today, the daylily garden picked up a little speed with 6 “first bloom for 2023” cultivators. It feels like late June usually does. I wonder if peak will be late or if we will just ride the plateau this year.

Lady Fingers and the Thin Man

It made me chuckle to have a man and a lady in the crop of “new for 2022 daylilies today. Other firsts were Stephanie Returns and Isaac – those names honor my daughter and grandson. See the instagram reel below for photos. In order: Stephanie Returns, Isaac, Thin Man, and Lady Fingers.

I’m trying not to feel totally disappointed by my underachieving Southwest Name Garden this year. So many with healthy leaves but no scapes this time around. Maybe Mother Nature is giving me a break.

We need rain here on the Colorado Plateau. No monsoons as of yet. So, I’m hoping Pink Rain Dance’s presence in my garden for the first time in 2023 is a sign from Mother Nature.

I only had 4 new cultivators today but up to almost 30 total. Still only about 50% of the mean for this date. Please check out my Instagram for photos. Cultivators in the order that they appear: Pink Rain Dance, Blackthorn, Wineberry Candy, and Route 66.
