Cheddar Cheese and Buttered Popcorn

I always chuckle at the food named daylilies. I had Cheddar Cheese and Buttered Popcorn both in bloom today. This was a first bloom for 2023 for Buttered Popcorn 🍿. I’m getting a craving now.

Other “first for 23” blooms for 7.11 – Amazon Day – were Mauna Loa, Purple Moonrise, and Pueblo Dancer. Please check out my reel with photos.

The Terrible Twenties

I had 20 total blooms today. From here, it takes over my life a little. Photos, posts to Facebook and Instagram, and this blog. Still, I look at my traditional early blooming areas and some are still very quiet. I don’t expect a high bloom rate but my water bill is at peak season.

Here are the “first of 2023” blooms for today (7/10): Lullaby Baby, Return A Smile, NOID Red Riddle, All American Chief, and Quilt Patch. I love the variety of color this time of year. Everything from pastel pink to vibrant red. Please enjoy my reel with photos!

Daylilies for 7.10.23

Missed Windows

My daylily booms are circa a month behind normal. The interesting thing I’m seeing is that in the shift from cold spring (May=March) to hot, dry summer, some of my early bloomers seem to be sitting this season out. Mother Nature telling them it’s not time to saying “it’s too late now, you missed your window. “

Had some nice new ones today, though. Alabama Jubilee, Mesa Verde, Mount Echo Sunrise, Nurse’s Stethoscope, and Chaco Canyon. Nurse’s Stethoscope is the one I suggested the name for to the hybridizer. Always nice to see her back. Here is my Instagram reel with the photos of these cultivators and their first blooms for 2023.

Oops, I missed Petite Petticoats!

The Eye of God

This is not intended to be a religious post, but Ojo de Dios was my favorite “new for 2023 bloom today.

There were several others Prairie Wildfire, Cheddar Cheese, Inkheart, and Canyon Colors. Inkheart is a new one from a local nursery to fill a pot left empty by a demise.

There may be lots of snow in the mountains but getting it into my pots when the monsoons haven’t come yet is a challenge. Fire weather alerts daily. But, it’s a dry heat.

Enchanting

It was hot, dry and my yard is starting to pop. But, I worry because some buds are drying up. No monsoons so far. I guess we got all our moisture in the wintery spring.

Now, That’s Orchid!

Ninety plus degrees and single digit humidity. It’s called fire weather and makes my phone ping alot. But, it was the first day I had a dozen cultivators in bloom.

Orchid Moonrise first bloom 7.7

Today’s “new for 23” blooms were Orchid Moonrise, Catherine Irene, and Inwood. Orchid Moonrise looks a little like the great pumpkin watching over the Southwest Daylily Garden. But she is not orange, she is a gorgeous orchid color.

Catherine Irene first bloom 7.7

Catherine Irene was mom’s name and is my first bloom in the Family Garden. Inwood is a reliable old favorite.

The Old Bucket is Blooming

Well, the bucket itself isn’t blooming, but the daylilies I put in it are. It’s been 8 years since I rounded up all the daylilies from one of my edge gardens because they were devolving. I’m surprised how well they have peacefully existed over the years.

Prairie Blue Eyes first bloom 7.5

Both today’s new blooms are from the “bucket” AKA planter. Prairie Blue Eyes is a classic with a decent blue eye in some lights. The other one is NOID that I call Dark Mystery.

Screams and Feathers: How Patriotic!

It’s the 4th of July, again! Today’s new blooms for 2023 are Feather Woman and Primal Scream. Something about those names reminds me of a 4th of July parade.

I think I missed a couple yesterday. It reminds me of the time my flight out of Denver was delayed multiple times. After a 6 hour wait, we got motel vouchers. We returned bright and early to another 6 hours of delays. One gentleman I met on the plane left the boarding area to charge his phone and almost missed the plane. When we get use to delays, we stop paying attention. They will be back.

Valentines and Show-offs

Two more beautiful daylilies joined the 2023 party today: Funny Valentine and Longlesson Show-off.

Funny Valentine first bloom 7.3

Funny Valentine was one of my early landscaping daylilies. She produces a huge number of blooms from her pot.

Longlesson Show-off first bloom 7.3

Longlesson Show-off was a bonus daylily. I recently moved it to the back patio to give more room to some new favorites. I think the color is nicer in the new spot.

What will the 4th of July bring?

The Red Blooms are Coming!

I had 3 new cultivators in bloom for 2023 today: Happy Returns, Indian Love Call, and Ruby Spider. The few blooms get lost in slow-moving garden. Ruby Spider stands out, though.
