Centuplicate!

The hot, dry weather continues here. The daylilies are popping and I had 10 cultivators with their first bloom of the year today. And, I’ve had 100 total cultivators bloom this season.

I can’t even tell you how many I have total. Probably 170-180. I added, Mother Nature subtracted. Plus, I just got a new computer and I haven’t moved my daylily software over yet. Too busy counting flowers on my wall.

Please enjoy my Instagram of today’s blooms. In order of appearance: Dr Doom, Wildwood Flower, Bela Lugosi, Bluegrass Music, Fol de Rol, Taco Twister, Chokecherry Mountain, Coral Taco, Treasure of the Southwest, Lobo Lucy,

Another Peakish Day

It was another peakish in the daylily garden. Not as many first blooms for 2023 as yesterday (or last year), but a decent number. It’s too late to catch-up to last year, but this hot weather is doing its darnedest.

I feel a little sad for my desert daylilies when it’s so hot and dry. They like the South or humid areas with rain much better. Blooms are so faded and look like melted wax by noon in so many. I’m not saying I don’t love them but the reason I take so many photos is to savor the blooms at their best without cooking myself in the sun.

Anyway – here is my Instagram reel with photos for today.

Cultivators in order of appearance: Mayan Poppy, Pick of the Litter, Mildred Mitchell, Star Over Milagro, Truchas Sunrise, Little Grapette, Hesperus, and Bold Tiger.

We had a little monsoon today. Let’s hope the rains are back for the season. Short, intense, unpredictable but cooling and all moisture helps.

A Mountain Peak in Kansas

Peak this year is going to be more of a Kansas Peak than a Colorado Peak. So many plants either succumbed to the prolonged freeze-thaw or they just didn’t put out scapes. Many early bloomers seem to be missing, but my garden is trying.

I came home from camping to 15 new cultivators in bloom for the first time in 2023. Here is my Instagram reel from today.

Names in order: The Colorado Kid, Burgundy Crab, Papa Longlegs, Kachina Dancer, Apache Beacon, Black Ice, Cheyenne Eyes, Indian Giver, Soco Gap, Melon Balls, Mini Pearl, Classy Lady, Orange Flurry, Cherokee Star, Platinum Pink Pallette Whispers.

Here is my Instagram from Sunday. I don’t think I posted it since we went camping.

Tomorrow’s another daylily.

Fizzle, Not Sizzle

It’s mid-July. I’m usually overwhelmed and a little exhausted from peak season. Not this year. I’ve only had over 30 on one day yesterday) and only had 2 first blooms for 2023 today. It feels like a fizzle this year – like it did when I had half as many daylilies.

Lime Frost first bloom 7.15

Anyway, today’s first blooms were Lime Frost and a NOID that was mislabeled as Fringe Benefit. Just photos today, no reel.

A Little Steam

Today, the daylily garden picked up a little speed with 6 “first bloom for 2023” cultivators. It feels like late June usually does. I wonder if peak will be late or if we will just ride the plateau this year.

Here are photos via Instagram. Names in order: Nona’s Garnet Spider 🕷, Passionate Returns ❤️, Heron’s Cove 🐦, Holy Sombrero 🤠, Kiva Dancer💃, and Chorus Line 💃. Potpourri of cultivators.

The next few days are supposed to be scorchers and no rain in sight.

Raindance!

We need rain here on the Colorado Plateau. No monsoons as of yet. So, I’m hoping Pink Rain Dance’s presence in my garden for the first time in 2023 is a sign from Mother Nature.

I only had 4 new cultivators today but up to almost 30 total. Still only about 50% of the mean for this date. Please check out my Instagram for photos. Cultivators in the order that they appear: Pink Rain Dance, Blackthorn, Wineberry Candy, and Route 66.

Cheddar Cheese and Buttered Popcorn

I always chuckle at the food named daylilies. I had Cheddar Cheese and Buttered Popcorn both in bloom today. This was a first bloom for 2023 for Buttered Popcorn 🍿. I’m getting a craving now.

Other “first for 23” blooms for 7.11 – Amazon Day – were Mauna Loa, Purple Moonrise, and Pueblo Dancer. Please check out my reel with photos.

Missed Windows

My daylily booms are circa a month behind normal. The interesting thing I’m seeing is that in the shift from cold spring (May=March) to hot, dry summer, some of my early bloomers seem to be sitting this season out. Mother Nature telling them it’s not time to saying “it’s too late now, you missed your window. “

Had some nice new ones today, though. Alabama Jubilee, Mesa Verde, Mount Echo Sunrise, Nurse’s Stethoscope, and Chaco Canyon. Nurse’s Stethoscope is the one I suggested the name for to the hybridizer. Always nice to see her back. Here is my Instagram reel with the photos of these cultivators and their first blooms for 2023.

Oops, I missed Petite Petticoats!

The Eye of God

This is not intended to be a religious post, but Ojo de Dios was my favorite “new for 2023 bloom today.

There were several others Prairie Wildfire, Cheddar Cheese, Inkheart, and Canyon Colors. Inkheart is a new one from a local nursery to fill a pot left empty by a demise.

There may be lots of snow in the mountains but getting it into my pots when the monsoons haven’t come yet is a challenge. Fire weather alerts daily. But, it’s a dry heat.

Enchanting

It was hot, dry and my yard is starting to pop. But, I worry because some buds are drying up. No monsoons so far. I guess we got all our moisture in the wintery spring.

I had some nice “new for 2023” blooms today including: Land of Enchantment, Hopi Jewel, Wild Horses, and a NOID that I call Purple Mystic. Baker’s dozen in bloom today.
