It’s Daylily Savings Time on the Colorado Plateau

I never adapted to Daylight Savings Time this year. It’s been a variety of factors – my own circadian rhythm, an evening Etsy revamp, new routines, etc. But, I need to start springing ahead – or is that summering ahead? Why? Because the daylilies are blooming at increasing rates this week. And, daylily season is like an online class – don’t get behind or you never catch up.

My season started with Saratoga Springtime on 5.23: the same day I started selling my art from home-based events. The same day I started a new injection (Tymlos) for my osteoporosis. (Gardening builds bone) The week after oral surgery. Two days before my first camping trip. And it the midst of the chaos, daylily season quietly started with a windblown bloom from my early bird cultivator.

On 5.31, Dream Keeper started blooming. My first Ned Roberts cultivator to join the 2026 bloom cycle. On 6.5.26 she threw a polymerous bloom with extra petals. This may have happened in response to our drought and low humidity – a sort of stress reaction. It is super pretty, though.

The third one to join the season was my simple yellow Stella. Her first bloom was on 6.2.26.

It felt like a lul. Like I could ignor the daylilies while I reorganized my business. Ha ha – the daylilies aren’t waiting. This week, amidst 3 on-ground events for my business, the blooms started coming. First, on 6/12, Return A Smile returned along with The Potter’s Touch. A day later, Ruby spider joined the small crowd – on the day of my 5th on-ground sale.

Today, I thought I would have a breather after the business event – but no dice. I spied with my little eye more action in my Southwest Garden daylily bed more cultivators. Canyon Colors was visible as I walked towards the garden with her rounded bloom shape and soft sandstone colors. As I drew closer, I noticed Land of Enchantment dancing in front of my banana yucca. I stepped into the wire garden fence in the easement to capture their photos when I noticed the first Comanche Princess in bloom.

And, I said, “That’s it!. It’s daylily savings time, again!”

Balancing a summer on-ground business with daylilies, hiking, camping, and everything else “summer” is kind of crazy, but I am committed to keeping the blog going this summer. IDK if I’ll post weekly or twice a week – I am keeping it a little soft until I see how things unfold.

As far as my business, it started as a hobby, painting daylilies on tiles to make coasters. The first years, I painted daylilies on ornaments and pots. But, as time went on, the focus shifted to my acrylic pour and cement projects – including adorable garden gnomes. This summer, I am going back to the daylily tiles as soon as I find time to sit and paint in a quiet, uninterrupted setting for a few hours.

I will be combining my acrylic pour backgrounds with daylilies painted in the foregrounds. The backgrounds with feature high desert colors – like sandstone and sage. And, the cultivators I will be painting will feature my daylilies with Southwest names. Ones like Dream Keeper, Canyon Colors, Land of Enchantment, and Comanche Princess.

I still have some cool daylily pots for sale (not for daylilies, but for houseplants and succulents). I will attach a few photos with listing links for those interested. These are terra cotta pots painted in a base of chalk paint. Then I add my stunning daylily painting over the chalk so it pops! So much fun.

June Daylily Highlights: Thriving in the Heat

Hello Daylily Fans,

It’s gotten hot, and my yard is exploding with many daylilies. Peak season is still a couple of weeks away, and I have about 130 cultivators with scapes! I lost a couple over the winter, so I need to update my total number one of these days.

Last post, I talked about my first 3 cultivators to bloom: Saratoga Springtime, Dream Keeper, and Stella de Oro. Since then, I have had the following:

Wow! That’s 20 more cultivators in bloom since my first post of the year! My very large array is getting larger! Today, I celebrate 3 years retired from 40 years of nursing. Quite a retirement anniversary bouquet.

I will say that some of my buds opened funny today – Stephanie Returns and Bluegrass Music both look like they wanted to sleep in. We have had days of fire weather with highs in the 90s, wind speeds 35+ MPH, and humidity under 15% (often single digits). And, we are still in extreme drought here (although no water restrictions yet). I think the buds get dried out! I will also say that the super ruffled blooms just don’t open right in such low humidity. I stay away from super ruffles now.

My community work consumes me. I don’t feel as retired as I did last year. I have always made time for the daylily blog. This year, I feel what I am doing is time-sensitive, and I need to balance my time with that in mind. I am not doing daily Instagram posts this year. I think I will update my latest blooms and gardening tips here about once a week.

Tip for today: Deserts don’t have ruffles! They have ridges.

Enchanting

It was hot, dry and my yard is starting to pop. But, I worry because some buds are drying up. No monsoons so far. I guess we got all our moisture in the wintery spring.

I had some nice “new for 2023” blooms today including: Land of Enchantment, Hopi Jewel, Wild Horses, and a NOID that I call Purple Mystic. Baker’s dozen in bloom today.

July, She Will Fly and Give No Warning to Her Flight

Simon and Garfunkel were spot on. July and daylily season will fly by. Time is different in July. The flowers . . . what will bloom and when will it bloom? Blogs are a way to document the days when daylilies dominate our lives. They fly by too fast to remember without written record.

I had 3 new Ned Roberts spiders today, and 6 total premiere blooms for 2022. I’m still in the 20s for bloom totals each day. Peak is 40-60, so we need premiere to outnumber finales for a bit longer.

The first Roberts spider was sold to me as either Pueblo Dreamer or Pueblo Dancer. It’s never fit either description. It hated life until I put it in a pot with a soak hose. I thought that might be making the bloom weird. But, she is happy now and I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s Roberts’ Bark at Me. In my Southwest Visions garden? Well, I always take the dogs on road trips. Woof.

Pink Rain Dance is timely this year in the middle of monsoon season. And, Land of Enchantment takes me to all our trips to New Mexico. Last summer was fun visiting Truchas, Chimayo, and Ghost Ranch.

South Seas is a nice coral color that put in an appearance, but not in the Southwest garden.

Sweet Petite Petticoats opened. I think she is my favorite small all yellow bloom

Canyon Colors is a favorite but struggling a bit. The bloom obviously has bug damage. July has definitely brought the bugs. Always a tough problem in the daylily garden.

Tomorrow, we will see what July holds in store.

July Daylily Roundup A-M

The next two posts are a listing of the daylilies that have bloomed ANYTIME during July – even if they started in June. It is a large list but also a colorful one. I believe only 3 of my cultivators were totally done in June – Saratoga Springtime, Scorpio and yellow Stella de Oro.

If you like Ned Roberts cultivators, you have come to the right place because I have about 70 of them, and most (except Navajo Curls and Adios Albuquerque) that are going to bloom the year have bloomed sometime during July.

I went to the rodeo here last night, so I am all practiced-up and ready to go.

Mapping Daylilies

Perhaps it is a bit premature to start my “between the seasons” chores. However, the best time to update my garden map was with several of the cultivators in bloom. It is funny what I forget when they aren’t blooming and look like a cross between grass and a spider plant. So, I printed off the old map and thought it would be a few adjustments. However, the garden grew and changed over the years and the numbering system was confusing – so I started from scratch.

Garden maps are great, though. You know what you have and what you don’t have. You know approximately where your cultivators are – so when that bloom you don’t remember pops up, you can figure out what it is (esp if you lost the label.

Anyway, back to the blooms – I had 3 very different premiers today.

El Desperado 7.17 – This was actually the first cultivator I had in the Southwest Garden (that was much smaller and just had yucca. I put it in a pot and set it out there with no water system other than my watering can. Suffice it to say, she didn’t flourish. I moved her and she did fine but up and died a couple years ago, so this is a replacement. She taught me that I needed irrigation out there before I tried daylilies in that spot, again. Now, there are 79.

Oh Erica 7.17 – This is a new addition to the family garden this year. I found the daylily by searching the family member’s name but couldn’t find it for sale. I found the hybridizer and he sold me the fans. I hope she does OK – she looks a little but eaten.

Purple Many Faces 7.17 – Pretty late for a premier bloom from this Roberts spider. It usually blooms early July. IDK – moving to the pot – also the drought – she was very slot to start this spring due to looking very dry.

Finales included a lot of big yellow-white flowers today. Sad to see them go.

Heavenly Curls finale 7.17 – She had her best bloom year ever, though!

Ghost Ranch finale 7.17 – She only had 2 buds so one premier and one finale. Glad I ordered more.

Papa Longlegs finale 7.17 – He also had a good bloom year.

Hopi Jewel finale 7.17 – I think of her as an earlier bloomer so it is unusual to still have her blooming.

Coral Taco finale 7.16 – I missed her yesterday

Only about 36 hours until I head for New Mexico for a few days – to see a Truchas sunrise and visit Ghost Ranch – Oh, and drive the Enchanted Circle in the land of enchantment.

I Dig the Mamas and the Papas

I chuckle today at the double meaning in the old Peter, Paul and Mary song. I do dig the Mamas and the Papas – literally and figuratively. Mama Cuna and Papa Longlegs, that is. Well, hey, today they showed up on the same day so the song has been in my head all day. See the featured photo for the cultivator blooms together today.

And, all day, I have been working in the daylily garden or on my photos because another record was broken today . . . 69 cultivators in bloom. It is partially bloom rate and partially bud count. These guys are blooming for weeks instead of days. I do have other things I need to do . . . I am glad I cleaned the house before this hit!

OK, so in addition to Mama Cuna of the Mamas and Papas, I had 6 premiers today – 7 total. We are still on top of the Grand Daylily Mesa with the blooms – this high plateau is like watching COVID cases last summer – but hopefully it dies down without a real epidemic because I have altitude sickness already.

Coburg Fright Wig 7.11 – I ordered this years ago for my front garden when I was filling it out with daylilies.

Fairy Tale Pink 7.11 – I believe this was a bonus several years ago. She is doing better with a drip system!

Lime Frost 7.11 – I wouldn’t mind a lime frost from the 7.11 about now. She was mail order several years ago, I believe. I really need to move my daylily software to my functioning computer because it knows.

Mama Cuna 7.11 – all wrapped up in the yucca. She has great big blooms.

Nearly Wild 7.11 – She was a bonus and I think she got her name because she looks like her ditch lily ancestor.

Purple de Oro 7.11 – A small grape colored bloom. I have never been super attached. Her pot is full of grass. Maybe I should put another mini in with her?

Red Hot Returns 7.11 – A parent to Passionate Returns. Local nursery cultivator.

This is usually about the time of year when I see the peak fading and I hate my bloom rate so I head to the nursery for a couple that still have buds so I can have a few more blooms. I am not doing that this year – although there is a Ned Roberts that I may add to the collection next year. Help me, I am drowning in the Mamas and the Papas! Please, dig me out of these blooms!

That is 117 in and 20 out, meaning I have 90 some actively blooming and others with premiers coming soon.

Giant Yellow Monsters

It was a day of fewer premiers today. That was actually kind of nice – although, I had 56 total in bloom. I think 40 was my top bloom day on 7/2 last year. Maybe the peak will last a while longer this year?

Anyway – the common thread between the premiers today is that they are all BIG yellow flowers. I feel like photography robs them of their significance because it takes away the perspective. The first half of June is little, simple yellow flowers. Then comes the color diversity. And, in July, the Yellow Monsters arrive.

The three today are Happy Hopi (another Roberts spider), Holy Sombrero (an old bonus with huge ruffled blooms), and Buttered Popcorn (a new “local nursery” addition this year). Other giant yellow of July are Hesperus (waiting to bloom) and Cheddar Cheese (who is in bloom, but not today). There are some other notable yellow bloomers that are not small – Mount Echo Sunrise (fairly pale yellow), Lady Fingers, Cripple Creek, Skinwalker, Desert Icicle, Taco Twister and Navajo Curls. Maybe I will do a post on that collection once they all hatch. These aren’t trumpets – they are monsters!

My routine is the same – I get up and take the photos with cell and camera following the same path everyday so I don’t miss anything (too often). Then I post to Facebook from my phone. I download photos from the Powershot and write the blog. Downloading the photos is painful because I get so sleepy – like fighting drugs but I don’t that that is from my thyroid tablet – just the heat.

Finales: I believe Orchid Moonrise is at finale. I will check for others as I cut scapes this week.

Oh, I got past my painter’s block and did a small coaster of Land of Enchantment. Not my best ever, but a start. I am keeping her as a symbol of getting unstuck and being semi retired!
