September: Where Have All The Daylilies Gone?

It’s September. How on earth did that happen? The days are growing shorter and cooler. Glad for the cool – but dread the time change and cold months.

I had a few more blooms in August – the 20th and 22nd.

Four-Corners Adventure Ends Daylily Season

The 22nd was the day we left for a 2-Corners camping adventure. It’s so fun to see the Ancient Pueblo Ruins. My love of the Southwest shows in my selection of daylilies!

Since returning, I had 1 bloom on September 1st. I have no scapes. This year will either end early or late. We will wait and see. But as of right now, Navajo Curls is my latest bloom for 2024. The scape got broken in the monsoon a few days before, but bloomed she did.

New Daylily Roots: Looking Ahead To Bloom Season 2025

I did get my daylily roots from Doris at Shady Rest Gardens on Saturday.

I generally soak my roots in a big pot to rehydrate them for a day or two before planting. This year, I decided to convert my two squash pots to daylilies because the squash have not done well. You can see how I place the roots in the pot. I cover them and trim the plant back. It’s magic to watch the leaves put out new growth before freeze.

I put my two new OZ daylilies in the squash pots and my two new Ned Roberts daylilies in the large multi-species pots I have out front. I want to get covers for the tops of the pots that are not buried this year.

Until the Last Daylily Blooms: Daylilies Dwindle But Art Production Thrives!

Dwindling Daylilies and Late Bloomers

The daylilies dwindle and I am back to creating new art! Each day still starts with a walk through the blooming daylilies to get photos. It is just a lot easier (and less spectacular) when there are only a couple blooming. And, my Art from the Hartt is back in production because I need colorful adventures to survive!

Still with us this past week were Adios Albuquerque, Autumn Minaret, Frans Hals, Happy Returns, Heirloom Heaven, Indian Sky, Kachina Firecracker, Navajo Curls, Purple Corn Dancer, Raven Woodsong, Rosie’s Red, Simmering Elephants, Skinwalker, and my NOID Roberts that could be Winds of Love or Skinwalker. This coming week is going to start to be much slimmer pickings. Oh, and Happy Returns is a first bloom for the year – likely my last first!

Encouraging Rebloomers, Prepping For Next Season

To encourage my rebloomers, I used liquid fertilizer yesterday and today. I gave about 1/3rd of the pots some organic fertilizer in their water. The rest got Miracle Grow spray today. This should help the plants fill out and rejuvenate before they go dormant.

I think part of my problem this year is that I didn’t do any fall care. I also need to put more soil in a few pots this fall – plus I plan time-released fertilizer next month. The weather is cooling off and we have some rain the next several days, so I picked the spray type since it is still summer.

Exciting New Daylily Blooms of 2024: Ghost Ranch, Simmering Elephants, and More

I am posting a quick update. Several mid-late bloomers in the past week. I haven’t posted here because of brain fog (no AC), little dogs, other blogs (I have 4 active) and old frogs. I am just going to do a quick post to catch-up.

My 3 Special Needs/Senior Rescues Keep Me Busy!

On 7.24, Ghost Ranch bloomed with the first decent sized blooms ever in my yard. I replaced the first plant a couple years ago because it died. I also had a NOID Red Spider that may be another Skinwalker or Winds of Love, but doesn’t perfectly match either. It was suppose to be Coyote Laughs, but it clearly isn’t. I also had reliable El Desperado.

On 7.25 I had a first ever bloom from Simmering Elephants. I like it! I also had Kachina Firecracker and Laughing Feather, but Ned Roberts spiders

Then, 7.26 brought Apache Uprising, Mama Cuna and Little Cadet.

The days 7.27-28 brought Petite Petticoats, Purple Corn Dancer and Cripple Creek.

Today, the newbies (for 2024) were Royal Palace Prince and Frans Hals.

It’s an interesting year – I am still in the low 20s every day. My highest day was in the 30s or low 40s – nothing like 60-70. It has been a slow, steady season.

I am going to go to weekly with this blog now that the season is slowing. I will continue to blog until the last daylily blooms, but frequency will decrease as the yard slows. I need to get back to life!

Look What the Rain Brought With It!

Hey, Guys, I’m super tired after a long day. Want to share my newbies from today.

Spirit of the Morning is a unique cultivator. I absolutely adore her. She earns her name. These blooms are wasted by noon.

Raven Woodsong is a gorgeous near black. It is such a stunning color and form. (That makes 57 Ned Roberts spiders so far this summer).

El Desperado is actually the first daylily I put in the Southwest Visions garden area a few years before I put in the garden. Wasn’t well planned out for irrigation and he moved back closer to the house. Then, I lost him a few years later and immediately replaced him. Definitely, a late bloomer.

Bloom rate headed for high 80s, but the Southwest Visions garden is nearly 100%. Except Truchas Sunrise, Navajo Gray Hills, the other 70 something have bloomed or have scapes.

I can’t believe I haven’t blogged in 4-5 days. I’m revamping my old porch that’s 80 years old with a 50 year old extention. And, part of it was DIY to begin with. It’s been an adventure.

My old porch stripped of paint that covered the previous owner’s names. I’ve owned my home for 25 years.

Meanwhile, the daylilies keep blooming. I’m even starting to get late bloomers. My daily count has dropped from 70 to 40. It’s slowing down but definitely not done.

7.21 saw Golden Eclipse, Shape Shifter, and Purple Grasshopper. All Ned Roberts spiders.

7.22 saw Zuni Eye, Coyote Laughs (which I think is a different Roberts spider but was sold to me as CL), Pizza Crust and Memories of OZ.

7.23 saw Dancing Maiden. My 55th Ned Roberts spider. I have 8 more with unbloomed scapes. Still hoping Navajo Gray Hills will throw a scape.

And, today, two bloomers that signal that the season is winding down: Royal Palace Prince and Heirloom Heaven.

I’m still working on the porch but hopefully done in a couple of days. I had no idea what I was getting into.
