Wow – It will be August next weekend. The daylily peak has come and gone. The cultivators were in the teens today . . . a massive drop off from 2-3 weeks ago. It is funny how the first 3 weeks of June are slow progress, then it explodes, then it goes to just a few here and there for months.

Today, we had one new cultivator. Heirloom Heaven bloomed for the first time in 2018. She is an adorable late-blooming mini. She is my last unbloomed scape on a cultivator that hasn’t bloomed yet. This could be it. It seems like I usually get some August scapes . . . not many, but a handful. I don’t know with this drought, though.

And, I had a rude awakening last night – because Mount Echo Sunrise doesn’t look anything like Mount Echo Sunrise. I looked at her tag, and she has two. The other one says Moon over Chimayo . . . and she looks like that one. So, I assume . . .

It is roll-call day! But, first, a dedication. It is camping weekend and I was listening to a song “Desperado” on my ipod. I have always identified with the song. So, I will put El Desperado as our lead photo today.

A Wednesday in Your Garden

Wednesday in your garden – it is a song by the Guess Who. It is kind of a sad song about getting shot down by someone . . . and the person still wants to spend Wednesday in the garden of the shooter. Funny how we cling to things that hurt us sometimes.

So, two awesome new blooms in the garden this Wednesday. Twirling Pinata is a cool Ned Roberts spider. She bloomed last year, but struggled after I put her in the pot . . . well, she was already sick. She did not show up this spring, so I replaced her. It is cool when a bare rook blooms the first year.

She is a sib (same pod) of Raspberry Propeller . . . in bloom today. So, here they are side-by-side. (Pinata – L, Propeller – R)

Nearly Wild also gave a first bloom today. She looks like the original daylily – called Fulva. Fulva is an invasive ditch lily. The hybrids are not invasive. This one clearly bears some genetic resemblance to her ancestor.

That is it, folks. The word is my exhaustion is the real deal . . . I need to be doing a lot of stuff to fight back and get healthy, again. After more work-ups to narrow it down so it can get treated. It’s a permanent deal, most likely. I am glad for my daylilies because they give my life some focus at a time when everything seems so foggy. At the same time, they do take a bite of time every day during peak.

Born to Be (Nearly) Wild!

Last night it rained. It has been overcast all day, and now it is raining, again. It is a good weekend to dig daylilies and put them in pots. It is not a good weekend to chill with my dogs at the brewery. Or, go camping!

So, I did have a new bloom today. Her name is Nearly Wild. And she held up pretty well to the rain and sprinkler.

I am fairly sure she is named for the ditch lily, Fulva, that is the original American daylily. It was brought to the US from Asia in the 19th century as an ornamental flower. It grows along ditches in certain areas of the country, and (unlike most daylilies we grow today) has rhizomes that make it invasive. You can order it, but it comes with a black box warning that it is invasive! But, it does look like Nearly Wild, don’t you think?

OK – so the pot moving took most of the day. So far, 43 moved and 13 to go. Of the 13, 10 are still in bloom or have scapes. So, tomorrow is a much shorter day with that piece. Plus, I am starting to do some dividing, so may do a bit of that tomorrow. The cool weather makes a good time to do this part. Probably more so than camping.
