Anasazi: My Daylilies in Ruins

Anasazi is a Navajo word meaning “enemy ancestors” – but today we equate the word with the Ancient Pueblo people of the Southwest. This week, I talked about Chaco Canyon, which was the center of the population – like our New York. If there was a pandemic, it would likely center at Chaco. But, I have visited so many Ancient Pueblo ruins on my trips that it is mind boggling. Here are some favorites:

Chaco Canyon has outlying ruins that are miles and miles away – We have visited the two directly to the north – Salmon and Aztec Ruins National Monument near Farmington, NM.

One of the most interesting of the Chacoan Outliers is Chimney Rock near Durango, CO. My heavens, I had the worst vertigo when we camped there in 2009. This is the highest of all the Chacoan Ruins and they think it was used to send smoke signals to the other sites! It was beautiful and rainy on the day I visited.

Of course, not too far west of Chimney Rock is the famous Mesa Verde National Park. I started fostering my little disabled dog the same weekend we visited Mesa Verde. She was Dotsie in her past life, and I was trying to think of a name that rhymed, so she is Sazi Ana.

Not to talk politics (save me from that during this pandemic!), but White House Ruins at Canyon de Chelly, AZ is also part of the the system. I miss this canyon.

Lowry Pueblo is a very interesting outlier not too far from my home. I love this one because you have to drive through rural farm land to reach the site. I love the figurines in the kiva – they represent summer and winter people.

Then, let’s zoom up to Utah to Edges of the Cedars State Park, where there is another Chacoan outlier. They had a crazy large geographic area for that time in civilization.

There were other Ancestral Puebloan ruins that are not direct Chaco outliers, like the ruins at Petrified Forest National Park. I love the Agate House – a ruin made of petrified wood!

And, Navajo National Monument has Betatakin and other Ancient Pueblo ruins.

I think the furthest one from the Four Corners is at Anasazi State Park in Utah – way up in the mountains near Boulder, UT.

That is a lot of ruins for one daylily. And, that Daylily is Anasazi. How on earth could I resist a name like this one? She was a bitty fan when I first got her – took her a few years to bloom. But, the first year she bloomed, she threw a double. It was memorizing.

She usually blooms fairly early, but is a rebloomer.

She looks a bit slow to take-off this spring. I probably should refresh her soil – the ants like her pot so I probably should take a look at the roots.

The First Sunday of August

It was camping weekend, which is good because I need the stress relief. Work is too busy and I am too exhausted. So, I returned to an encore – Stella de Oro has been out of bloom for 3 weeks and she is back. I will just leave her in the roll call. Our last roll call of 2018. We had 37 in bloom this week. We had 56 last week and I predicted half as many this week. Actually – more like 2/3rds. When you look at all the finales this week (see photos below), I will make the same prediction for next week. That’s about 18 for the week. We don’t have many scapes yet, and the ones mostly only have a bloom or two left. Heirloom Heaven, Indian Sky, Pink and Cream, Dream Catcher, and Purple Corn Dancer have some life left in them. I am hoping Passionate Returns, Stephanie Returns, Ruby Stella and Red Hot Returns all return.

Today was a mellow day in the garden with 13 cultivators in bloom. It has been weeks since we had under 10 in a day, but it won’t be weeks until that happens, again. The workday brought more news of change – meaning lots more work in the weeks to come. I guess it is good daylily season is winding down because I am sure there will be a lot of very long days in my future! I am kind of like a daylily any more – I open with such creative color, but after a few hours I am feeling the heat. By the end of 11 or 12 hours, I wilt. I need a winter rest!

So, for fun, I looked back to see what was in bloom on July 1st. And, two of those daylilies were still in bloom today! So, hats off to our July Grit Girls, Passionate Returns and Yellow Punch!

Passionate Returns is also a finale bloom – for now. I am hoping for a rebloom. To be honest, I think the same may be true for Yellow Punch, but I don’t remember.

So, this is the last week of not posting every cultivator that bloomed that day in the daily blog. And, the blog may not be daily by the end of August. In September, it will go weekly, most likely. I am still looking for any late bloomers that did not bloom yet to put up scapes . . . not much to report. The good news is Indian Sky is putting out 2 brand new scapes, so she will be with us for a while longer.

Wow – It will be August next weekend. The daylily peak has come and gone. The cultivators were in the teens today . . . a massive drop off from 2-3 weeks ago. It is funny how the first 3 weeks of June are slow progress, then it explodes, then it goes to just a few here and there for months.

Today, we had one new cultivator. Heirloom Heaven bloomed for the first time in 2018. She is an adorable late-blooming mini. She is my last unbloomed scape on a cultivator that hasn’t bloomed yet. This could be it. It seems like I usually get some August scapes . . . not many, but a handful. I don’t know with this drought, though.

New Faces, Finales, and Roll Call

It is time for Sunday roll call. But first, a couple cool new Roberts Spiders. Meet Mount Echo Sunrise – She is a big spider that reminds me of Dream Catcher. This is her first-ever bloom in my yard – I put her in a couple years ago.

Then there is Sante Fe Christmas – And she looks like a Christmas bow. Red, green with curly petals. I really love her – too bad she lost her other buds. Despite the improved bloom rate, the drought has taken a toll.

Next up – Finales. Of course, Santa Fe Christmas is a finale today 😦

When it Doesn’t Rain, It Pours!

The drought is still on. We have had hints of monsoons, but no real rain. I think there are close to a dozen wildfires in Western Colorado now. My water bill is awful and my lawn is still brown. But, somehow, the daylilies keep pouring. I wonder what my bloom rate would be WITH rain? It won’t be perfect this year but improved already. We will return to that in a minute.

New flowers today – Let’s start with the surprise! So, when I planted the Southwest Garden, I ended up with lots of bonus plants that were the same plants that I had ordered from someone else. So, I combined them. I had Fox Ears next to Happy Hopi – and I had 2 Happy Hopis. I thought. So, last fall when I did the containers, I thought I had put one of the Happy Hopis in a pot in the mural garden. Joke is on me . . . this is Fox Ears. I love that she seems to be in love with the solar light. Like a cartoon where a person falls in love with a robot. This is obviously a first-ever bloom.

My other new (for 2018) Ned Roberts spider is Desert Icicle. Man, I could use an icicle about now. And, some rain!

Indian Sky had a first bloom for 2018 – she bloomed later last year, I believe.

Speaking of later, Anasazi showed up early this year. She is an early re-bloomer, but did not bloom until August last year – and gave pretty double blooms. It will be interesting to see if she returns with those in the fall.

Fairytale Pink is such a pretty little bloom. I nearly lost her last year before I put them in pots. She had a few scrawny fans and put out only two buds last year. I think this year will be better.

Last, but never least, is Cheddar Cheese. She has not bloomed since 2016! She is one of my older daylilies and bloomed reliably for a few years. Same pot, same place – stopped blooming. Now, she has a new pot and is in the Border Garden (a change) this year.

OK – so last night, I was counting daylilies to put myself to sleep. As of today, we are up to 98 cultivators for the year that have bloomed. Remember less than a week ago when we were trying to get to 69? Man, I am a little burned out with all the photos! That means, for this year so far we have a 56% bloom rate. Last year, we only made it to 48%. I count 25-30 scapes on daylilies that have yet to bloom. I figure we might see 5 late scapes (hopefully more, but I will stick with this for now). So, if I add 32 blooms to out 98, that brings us to 130. That’s about 75%. Not bad for the first year of a new pot system . . . in a horrific drought. The new faces should be slowing down shortly. I’m ready.

There Goes The Sun

Tonight will be my last nightly blog. Maybe weekly from here out. It struck me how dark it was by the time I got off work. Like, WTH? The change always seems so quick to me in fall and so slow in the spring. And, then we set the clocks to make it worse.

Today, though, brought another double Anasazi bloom. These are such cool flowers!!! I have wondered if there was a mix-up when they shipped it . . . early/mid bloomer and not a double. But, it is a rebloomer, so maybe that is why is showed up so late. I did find a post in the Lily Auction today that said that it can double. Perhaps it knows it is stealing the show right now with so little competition.

It reminds me a bit of my new Azalea, actually. Pink frilly blossoms. Make blooms while the sun shines. Tomorrow starts the 4th month of blooms. I can’t wait for May!

Double or Nothing

Anasazi is turning out to be a delightful addition to my late bloomers. She is producing a lot of double blooms. I only have a couple other doubles, and neither bloomed this year. She was my only flower today . . . otherwise, nothing.

Today, I did the musical pots task. It was hot, too – 91. But, it is finished. No more big digging projects this year. I up-potted Mesa Verde and Canyon Colors – the size of their root balls was amazing. I feel sort of sad for the daylilies in the Southwest garden – those pots will be easy to outgrow. Still, more space than now. Who knows what ideas I will have for the future?

I also got the drip system rigged up for the border garden pots. That will go on with the soak hose. I hope there is enough sun out there. Oh, who knows what a couple years will bring? All I know is that another season is winding down . . . yet, so many of the daylilies look so happy to have a chance to grow in good soil with better water retention. The Colorado Plateau has sunshine going for it, though. As long as there aren’t trees in the way, that is.
