Return from the Colorado Mountains: Fourteen New Bloomers for the Season

I always feel overwhelmed the day after I take a camping break – especially during daylily season! Fortunately or unfortunately, my underwhelming bloom rate for 2024 has made it more manageable. But, it is still a lot of photos to organize and turn into an Instagram reel/blog post.

Below are my Ned Roberts’ spiders that are new since my last post.

So, how is the bloom rate doing now? I have had 84 of 196. So, 43%. That’s way down from the past few years for this point in time. I am hoping to hit 60%. That would take 34 more new blooms for 2024. I think that’s optimistic. Too many pots decided to rest this year.

Remediating a Poor Bloom Rate

Gardening is a science experiment. I am going to try some liquid spray fertilizer once we have a some cooler weather in the forecast. I will probably do more time release before the end of the season – and I am considering working some manure into the pots in September, about a month before freeze.

Peaks and Wildflowers

I have a wonderful trip to Hahns Peak, Colorado – and to Pearl Lake State Park which is named after my grandmother. The land was once a summer sheep pasture for my granddad’s companies. Grandma sold it to the Forrest Service – and the State Parks owns that portion with the Lake. This is my blog post from last year – I am still working on my post for this year so please check back in a few days.

It’s That Time, Again

It’s daylily season, so I spend a fairly significant amount of time photographing and posting about my daylilies. I love my daylilies but I admit to getting a but burned out on all the posting chores during the peak. Still, my blooms only look good for a couple hours in this dry heat. The photos give me something to savor for a long time to come. PS if you have noticed shorter blogs and reels vs photos that’s why.

Today, only 3 cultivators opened for the first time this year. Cultivators in order: Moon Over Chimayo, Happy Hopi, and Fooled Me.

A Mountain Peak in Kansas

Peak this year is going to be more of a Kansas Peak than a Colorado Peak. So many plants either succumbed to the prolonged freeze-thaw or they just didn’t put out scapes. Many early bloomers seem to be missing, but my garden is trying.

I came home from camping to 15 new cultivators in bloom for the first time in 2023. Here is my Instagram reel from today.

More Spiders in My Bed

Spider daylilies in my flower bed, that is.

I had 3 new Roberts spiders today. That makes 45 Cultivators from Ned Roberts so far.

Dream Keeper was one of my first 3 Roberts spiders when I started the Southwest Visions garden 6 years ago. Love the whispy shape and colors.

Mama Cuna reminds me of the painting I did last fall. She is planted right next to my huge banana yucca and looks like a weird bloom from the succulent. Mama Cuna is a signal that the season is moving on. She is mid-late.

Santa Fe Christmas was my favorite today for some reason. The colors are shape are unique and caught my eye. Not many buds this year, so savor every one of them.

Also, little Tiger Kitten (funny, I sell begonias with that name) opened one of its few buds for the first time today.

134 have bloomed so far. So, bloom rate in the 70s with lots left to go. Purple Corn Dancer is starting to put out scapes. She is always the last one.

On With the Show, This is It!

As the garden rapidly accelerates to peek, I look around to see my lawn that needs mowing, my hedge that needs clipped. Oh, but the daylilies have been rehearsing for the show for months. How can I ignore them? I need a be 3 people in July.

Bunches of premiere blooms today. Where to start. Two new Ned Roberts spiders, Cheyenne Eyes and Navajo Rodeo.

I divided Cheyenne Eyes last fall and she struggled this spring. She produced 1 shore scape with 2 buds. At least I’ll see a couple of blooms.

Navajo Rodeo 7.3

Navajo Rodeo has not bloomed in at least a couple of years. Before that, she was reliable. Good to have her back.

The Colorado Kid 7.3

The Colorado Kid, our blog namesake bloomed. She is one of my favorite near blues!

Holy Sombrero is a fun, huge yellow bloom. Nice bonus daylily several years ago.

Catherine Irene 7.3

Catherine Irene, same name as my momma, bloomed today.

Lullaby Baby 7.3

Lullaby Baby, a sweet pastel color, was another new face.

Strutter’s Ball 7.3

Strutter’s Ball also showed up to the dance.

If I keep getting 5-7 new ones/day, it will quickly crescendo. A week, maybe. Lol, I’ll be camping. But, only miss 2 full days. On with the show, this is it!

Oh, perhaps more like aye yi yi. I woke up to 70 cultivars in bloom today. Let’s see, I had 13 the day I left on vacation on 7/5. I’ve slept in my own bed 5 going on 6 nights since then.

Thirteen is a good number of blooms. Interesting but not overwhelming. But now, just 5 days at home later, I’m at 118/180 daylilies that have bloomed. We went from 7% to 66%.

The problem is that I had trips and conferences to prepare for along with two sick dogs . . . And, work. So, I’ve been using my cellphone for daily shots. I use my Powershot, too, but haven’t edited or organized anything since June 25 or something.

Today, I got 2 days organized and played a bit with my daylily software. Here it is midnight thirty but I am more caught up. I just know that I’ve been so distracted this year that the blog in mediocre because my passion is not here yet.

Next weekend, I stay home. Hopefully, I can keep catching up. Aye yi yi, I need to stay on the Interstate of progress after I get some sleep. The daylilies are already blooming. Can you hear them?

It is so good to be home.  However, I found the need to catch-up on a little sleep took priority over the garden work I had wanted to do.  Work travel weekends are a little awkward in the summer.

At any rate, I had several new kids in the yard today.

El Desperado is a favorite.  It is so odd, because he didn’t bloom much last year.  This year, lots of scapes and buds.  I moved him 3 feet.  Right next to him is Canyon Colors, who bloomed like crazy last year but did nothing this year.  I think I will divide it this fall and see.  Time to start giving away extra roots!

Lime Frost is my only real off-green daylily.  I love this one with its big, fluffy near white blooms.  And, it sounds like a treat from Dairy Queen.  (Same bloom with and without the sun shining on it.)

Mini-Pearl is in my yard because my grandma’s name was Minnie Pearl (she hated in and dropped the Minnie).  My car is named Mini Pearl, too.

Razzmatazz is a cool little purple flower that reminds me of Purple de Oro.

It was kind of a low bloom day – less than 20.  Last year it peaked again the 3rd week of July.  I am hoping!

Roadtrip!

Today’s new blooms remind me of my annual road trip to the southwest.  First, an old friend that is ailing a little this year, Route 66.  I am hoping my driveway drip system kicks this one back in because I think I will only get 2 blooms this year, and this one is very undersized.

The second one is absolutely gorgeous: Dream Catcher.  It bloomed last year, but this year the blooms seem bigger and more iridescent.  It totally looks like the dream catchers that the Navajo sell at the roadside stands along the highway.   And, if this is in the middle of my Southwest Garden, then there is hope for more blooms next year.  In fact, Adios Albuquerque is sending up a scape!!!

My garden has been my road trip this week.  I am so grateful for a hobby with so much positive emotion.  Gardens are a great place to heal and escape the obsessions that create imbalance all around me now.  I am obsessed with my blooms.

I had 23 in bloom today.  So, the peak is close.   I am a little bummed to have to leave for a business trip in the middle of it.  I hope I don’t miss too much.  I wish I could have a webcam on each of my daylilies.

Tomorrow – pretty sure there will be new faces.  Who knows?  That is the joy of daylily season.

If yesterday was a little quiet (for July) in my garden, today was a bit overwhelming.  There were several new faces.

Thin Man bloomed for the first time ever – the biggest bloom (12 inches) in my garden.

One of my Ned Roberts Southwest spiders also showed his colors for the first time ever in my yard.  Meet Aztec Firebird.

And, a nice little addition called Pick of the Litter was also a first-time in my yard bloomer today.  Funny, this was a gift plant and I don’t remember the plant it came with – or if that plant has bloomed.

First blooms for 2016 in my existing daylilies included one that I don’t have a name for – so I decided to call it Montrose Sunset.  I picked this up when I xeriscaped a few years ago . . . before I was a true hobbiest.  And, I cannot find the name but I like the bloom a lot.

Prelude to Love is a pretty dark red/purple bloom that reappears each year, as well.

Strutter’s Ball is one I added last year and (like its neighbors, Inwood and Funny Valentine) it is astruggling to produce blooms this year.  I decided today that when my blues finish blooming in a week or two, I will switch their locations and see what happens.  The issue, I believe, is figuring out which pots the sprinkler system over-waters, and which it under-waters.  And, then, balancing that.

Hey, folks, that is eight new blooms in the yard today.  That puts me at circa 45 different blooms this year. (That means about 90 have not bloomed – but many are year ones or small year twos.)   I only need 20+ more to hit 50%.  I have a lot of scapes – so maybe . . . stay tuned.
