Desperado

It is roll-call day!  But, first, a dedication.  It is camping weekend and I was listening to a song “Desperado” on my ipod.  I have always identified with the song.  So, I will put El Desperado as our lead photo today.

Desperado – The Eagles

Desperado, why don’t you come to your senses?
You been out ridin’ fences for so long now
Oh, you’re a hard one
I know that you got your reasons
These things that are pleasin’ you
Can hurt you somehow

Don’t you draw the queen of diamonds, boy
She’ll beat you if she’s able
You know the queen of hearts is always your best bet

Now it seems to me, some fine things
Have been laid upon your table
But you only want the ones that you can’t get

Desperado, oh, you ain’t gettin’ no younger
Your pain and your hunger, they’re drivin’ you home
And freedom, oh freedom well, that’s just some people talkin’
Your prison is walking through this world all alone

Don’t your feet get cold in the winter time?
The sky won’t snow and the sun won’t shine
It’s hard to tell the night time from the day
You’re losin’ all your highs and lows
Ain’t it funny how the feeling goes away?

Desperado, why don’t you come to your senses?
Come down from your fences, open the gate
It may be rainin’, but there’s a rainbow above you
You better let somebody love you (let somebody love you)
You better let somebody love you before it’s too late

OK – so new to the garden for the first time in 2018 today is Pizza Crust.  I get a little hungry looking at her because I am stuck with low cholesterol pizza that doesn’t have much crust.

New Faces, Finales, and Roll Call

It is time for Sunday roll call.  But first, a couple cool new Roberts Spiders.  Meet Mount Echo Sunrise – She is a big spider that reminds me of Dream Catcher.  This is her first-ever bloom in my yard – I put her in a couple years ago.

MountEchoSunrise7.15.6withDreamCatcher.jpg

Then there is Sante Fe Christmas – And she looks like a Christmas bow.  Red, green with curly petals.  I really love her – too bad she lost her other buds.  Despite the improved bloom rate, the drought has taken a toll.

SanteFeChristmas7.15.3.jpg

Next up – Finales.  Of course, Santa Fe Christmas is a finale today 😦

Primal Scream is another finale.

Happy Hopi gave a finale bloom today.  I really enjoyed her big, bold, blonde blooms.

Now, on to our roll call.  These are the blooms from 7/9 through today.  But, first, we have about 12 with unbloomed scapes remaining and mid-50s with no bloom/no scape.  We are at 107 cultivators (+/-).  Add 12, and we get close to 120.  I am still hoping for 130 total this year.

The Company They Keep

Today brought 40+ blooming cultivators to the yard.  The interesting thing is that only two of these were new faces for 2018.  It is safe to say it is the peak!  One of the things I love about looking at photos of the peak is that there are lots of other flowers in the background of a lot of the photos.  It isn’t always other daylilies, either.  The daisies and bluebells add interest.  (I hate how invasive the bluebells are – the pots are helping.)

So, new blooms are Heron’s Cove.  She was added Fall of 2016 and bloomed last year.  I had her in the Near Blue section of the Walkway Garden, but she didn’t look that blue.  So, I up-potted her and moved her to the NW corner of the house with Mesa Verde, Canyon Colors, and El Desperado.  I’ve decided to call it the Garden at Pooh Corner.  She looks way bluer to me this year. Maybe it is she gets less sun here.  Or, maybe she looks bluer away from the other near blue daylilies.

HeronsCove7.5.5.jpg

Heron’s Cove 7/5

There was also another tiny bloom from Pooh Corner . . . Purple de Oro.  She is such a generic looking mini.  I have considered getting rid of her . . . and I had 2 for awhile.  But, there is something cute about her petite purple smile.

PurpledeOro7.5.1

Purple de Oro 7/5

OK – so it is late and tomorrow is my early work day.  And, I leave to camp tomorrow so need to finish packing.  There was no internet there last year, so I may not be able to post until Sunday. There will, no doubt, be new faces by then.  I am beat . . . need shut-eye. Adding daylilies to my beat-the-clock schedule is rough right now . . . but, I feel it is a positive, too.

20180705_202611

Southwest Garden at Peak

Other blooms today were: Purple Many Faces, Comanche Princess, Navajo Rodeo, Papa LongLegs, Holy Sombrero, Soco Gap, Black Ice, Hopi Jewel, Dream Catcher, Aztec Firebird, Happy Hopi, Prairie Blue Eyes, Purple Mystique, Red Riddle, Lady Fingers, Canyon Colors, The Colorado Kid, Mildred Mitchell, Jungle Queen, Pick of the Litter, Prelude to Love, Catherine Irene, Mini Pearl, Isaac, Stephanie Returns, Happy Returns, Ruby Spider, Thin Man, Passionate Returns, Mellow Balls, Route 66, Ruby Stella, Yellow Punch, Black-eyed Susan, Stella de Oro, Nurse’s Stethoscope, Strutter’s Ball, Chaco Canyon, Wild Horses, Return a Smile, Funny Valentine.  I think that is it.

Drizzle

It’s Friday!  So, after work, I dashed out to continue the daylily potting project.  Ran out of potting soil after the first two, so ran to Home Depot.  Came home and was working on another two when the rain started.  It is a nice rain . . . drizzle, but enough to cool things off and wet the garden.

No new faces today.  Tiger Kitten lost his only bud  😦   For tomorrow, I think maybe Nearly Wild might bloom.  At any rate, I decided to make a collage like I did every day last year during the peak.  I don’t have enough time do to that this year, but wanted something to show for the last of the big bloom days of July.

Collage 2017-07-28 21_39_01.jpg

The rain on Wednesday bought mushrooms to my Southwest garden . . . guessing the mushroom compost come to life.  Weird, in the desert.

Mushrooms.jpg

Tomorrow, the journey continues.  I wanted to be camping, but decided to plan 3 camping trips for August this weekend AND STICK TO IT!!!!  But, for now, I am making good progress on the daylily potting. And, not camping in the rain. I have so much to do before freeze and Amazon is slow with my second order of pots.  Oh, well, like the daylily, all we really have is this moment.

Bluegrass Blues

Today, at long last, I get to tell the story of Bluegrass Music because she bloomed!  When I first started getting savvy about buying bare root daylilies, I learned that there were no true blue ones.  This made me want blue ones!!!  We always want what we can’t have.  So, I found this one on a website and tried to order . . . it was a weird process, but I finally called them.  They had one small fan of this one left, but it would be $50.  Well, I had to have my addiction fix, so I bought the one small fan as the first of a handful of near blue daylilies.  PS – I have not ordered from that place since – you can get these on the Lily Auction for $25 for 2 fans.

Bluegrass1.7.2.jpg

Other newcomers – This one is Heron’s Cove.  It has a story of being a wanna be near blue.  I lost a near blue and this one was an economical one.  BTW a much more ethical grower told me to expect it not to look blue except in exceptional circumstances.  I want to get out to see it before the sun hits it next time.

HeronsCove4.7.2.jpg

Prairie Blue Eyes (I am pretty sure) showed up in my yard today . . . in an unexpected place.  It is in one of my driveway pots, but it did not put up scapes this year.  Interestingly, I had some daylilies in my back garden, but it was too shady and the daylilies there were slowly dying back.  So, two years ago, I fixed it so they had more sun, water and better soil.  This one, I moved to the front garden last year not having a clue what it was.  (I did not always know names or label them).  So, it was stunning to see this little one open in the front garden.  Makes me think I need to move the others to a sunnier spot.

PrairieBlueEyes3.7.1.jpg

Zuni Thunderbird is one of my favorites, but the thrips like it and the first blooms are always a little beat up.  Need to spray it today.  Think I will take a nap first, though.
