I have no idea where to even start with premiers. I’m buried in catching up with daylily photos. I’ll give it a shot. Thank heaven I post to Facebook every day. Sometimes I do miss things, though.

I need a stiff drink before I finish. Lol. That’s 31 new faces since I posted on Sunday. Sometimes, I wish we could flatten the curve of peak a little. Gonna be crazy for a bit.

The next two posts are a listing of the daylilies that have bloomed ANYTIME during July – even if they started in June. It is a large list but also a colorful one. I believe only 3 of my cultivators were totally done in June – Saratoga Springtime, Scorpio and yellow Stella de Oro.

If you like Ned Roberts cultivators, you have come to the right place because I have about 70 of them, and most (except Navajo Curls and Adios Albuquerque) that are going to bloom the year have bloomed sometime during July.

I went to the rodeo here last night, so I am all practiced-up and ready to go.

June Daylily Blooms A-Y (no Z yet)!

I’m back! My house is cleaner and I feel like I can pick-up the blog, again. Don’t worry, I spent my usual amount of time with my daylilies in the AM. I love getting photos of them – something to get out of bed for. After three years of a stressful job and a commute, I just had to clean because my poor home has been like a neglected garden. I needed to pull weeds and plant some new seeds.

I am going to show off my June blooms (A to Z) for June in this post. I am going to have a good bloom rate this year and it sort of scares me what peak will be like with all my plants so happy. Good thing the house is clean. I count 51 cultivators for June 2021. Last year, it was 50 in June – so close. I think I have about 180 cultivators now – almost 30% have bloomed.

Scorpio premier 6.26, finale 6.29. Only two buds for the first bloom ever after 5 years in my yard.

Stella premier 6.7 and dwindling – I don’t think we have a finale yet but maybe.

Hi all – When it is Saturday and it hasn’t been the fun day that I planned. COVID had driven the world mad – and they seem to all be mad at me. So, how about a little Ned Robert’s daylily therapy? I fell in love with Ned’s southwestern named daylilies after finding Kokopelli on Lily Auction 5 years ago. I have a collection of 70 ish now. I am including a few from 2019 if they didn’t bloom this year. Comment with your favorite! Direct from Montrose, Colorado . . .

Mystery Solved

When I put in my Southwest daylily garden, I filled it with a lot of Ned Roberts spiders and other names that sounded like the Southwest in some way. I put most of the garden in about 4 years ago. I ordered from several different daylily hybridizers/gardens across the country. I planted them and labelled them.

Since then, I have dug most of them back up and put them in buried pots. I got new labels a couple of times – now they are metal. I made a map about 3 years ago – and it is pretty reliable except there are doubles of a couple and that doesn’t make sense because of how I organized them when I planted them.

That brings me to today’s premier blooms. The mystery daylily that is a double of Kachina Dancer (bloomed yesterday) but in a different row and is clearly a different bloom – but same name on the label. So, what is it? Well, I also ordered Kiva Dancer about that time and looking at pictures from the web, I think that I just mislabeled the daylily. Kachina instead of Kiva. Anyway – she bloomed last year and I had the wrong name because Kachina Dancer had never bloomed before yesterday. That’s a long story, but Kiva Dancer (I think) had her first 2020 bloom this year.

We started with yellow trumpets and today brought some showier yellow daylilies. Holy Sombrero is a very showy, big, ruffly bloom.

And, one of my older daylilies that is loving the place in the garden that I moved it a couple summers ago premiered today – Cheddar Cheese. I have a picture I painted of her in my room – one of my first paintings.

Last, but never least, was a premier on Heron’s Cove. It was cold last night, so many of my blooms didn’t open right today. Hers is a little frumpy.

I have a request of my readers. I am looking for a daylily named Erica for my family section of the garden. I have both grandkids, my oldest daughter, my mom, my grandma . . . but I need to find one named Erica, like my youngest daughter. I like one called Oh, Erica by a hybridizer in Indiana named Bart Beck – but I can’t find contact. I also like “Erica’s Awake”. Anyway – if my readers know of any Erica named daylilies or how to contact Bart Beck – please leave a comment.

Humungous red spiders surviving in a drought. Something the opposite of itsy bitsy spiders in the rain. Plus, these spiders are daylilies.

I only had two premiers today, and 30 total blooms. The first premier is one of the daylilies that my pup, Kachina, is named after. Yep, I was planting my daylilies when I rescued her. Her name was Tina . . . so Kachina fit perfectly. Honestly, I think this is the only bloom I have ever had on this particular cultivator in 4 years since I planted. So, that is a real premier bloom.

The second big spider was one of my early mail order daylilies. I think it reminded me of Ruby Spider. This is probably one of the biggest blooms in my collection if you measure petal-end to petal-end.

The wind blew in cold and a touch of rain. It took forever for a lot of the blooms to open and they always look funky when that happens. But, the two big, old red spiders were wide awake.

I’m up to 50 cultivators that have bloomed now. That is 30% and it isn’t July yet. Let’s see what tomorrow brings.

Kachina Dancer and a Mural

I started my mural 22 years ago. I finished a few hours ago. For this round. So much has changed. Now, daylilies live on a drip system on this porch.

As I’m taking my spring road trip vicariously through my daylily names, I’ve got my dream vacation in my mural. All the 4-corners States are represented.

The older mural have cactus from the Senora, Monument Valley, and a Pueblo Indian dwelling. It’s funny, I used artwork that I owned as my prototype for the latter two.

Now, I use actual photos of vacations. The Southwest is a much bigger part of my life now. So are daylilies.

I blogged about my mural last week and used Pueblo Dancer. This time, I’m using Kachina Dancer.

She is a pretty Ned Roberts spider. I’ve had her several years. She has only bloomed once, and I captured only one bloom. I hope she paints the garden this summer.

The Shrunken Days of August

My eyes are so tired that they drip with tears. I woke up before dawn, but dawn is getting later. And, my sprinklers now go off after dark in the evening even though I have not reset the time. Work starts earlier and ends later. Things always seem chaotic at the start of a school year. I am tireder than is healthy – it impacts my wellbeing. I can’t push the envelope the way I use to. Neither can the sun — it begins its rest cycle. I feel a bit sad because I don’t like the cold, dark side of the year. Mostly, though, I feel tired.

So, I had two Premiers today that I want to talk about before sleep. Frans Hals is one of my early mail order daylilies. It has been moved around the yard a few times. I thought this was the most beautiful daylily I had ever seen – this and Best Seller. I believe they were in my first batch of roots. Now, it looks kind of ordinary. Still, a nice late bloomer.

And, my apologies to Chaco Canyon and Kachina Dancer. I got them mixed up. The one that bloomed earlier is Kachina Dancer. Chaco Canyon was divided and I thought her division had put out some small flowers – but it was Kachina Dancer. My main Chaco lost a scape to a storm in the spring – but managed to send out a re-bloom spike that opened today. Clearly, a different flower.

Thirty-two today. I have broken records nearly every day for a month. As the days shrink, so will the daylilies. Perhaps we all need a rest.

Oh – and my Apple Blossom Amaryllis baby bulbs (mom was pregnant about 3 years ago) finally bloomed! Merry Christmas – Winter Solstice is coming.

A Celebration of Spiders! (Ned Roberts)

The days grow August-quiet. It seems a dream that I had nearly 60 blooms per day just a month ago. So, today, we will do finales. And, then, a roll-call of my Ned Roberts spiders.

I have around 64 of Ned’s spiders in my garden. I had 42 bloom this year or about 65%. Last year, I had 13 (about 20%) bloom. Marked improvement. All total, to date, I have had 48 (or 75%) bloom. That is a long way from 100%. But, marked improvement. I think some of the ones that bloomed in 2016 were put in that year (still flourishing from the nursery), struggled last year in the clay soil, and are recovering (growing new roots) this year in their pots. I am sure that the drought had an impact, as well.
