Daylilies are My Life

This time of year, it feels like daylilies are my life. I have had about 30 blooms in the garden for several days. Yesterday, we hit 40. Today, we hit 60!. It took me almost an hour just to photograph them – let alone photo editing and posting. Last night, I took a lot of photos of fireworks – It felt very similar in my garden today. A few pauses, but mostly lots of action. Do I think we are at peak – no. But it is getting closer.

Here are the premiers for today. Hang on – there are 10 (so about 80 cultivators have bloomed so far). Today, there were several of my favorite hybridizer’s blooms that opened (Ned Roberts). Daylily season is like Christmas . . . the peak is a little overwhelming. At the same time, it is like old friends who visit once a year.

Chokecherry Mountain 7.5 (A Ned Roberts Spider)
Feather Woman 7.5 (A Ned Roberts spider)
Heavenly Curls – one of my favorite bonus daylilies!
Longlesson Show-off – Not one of my favorite bonus daylilies, but the bloom looked fuller and more colorful today than usual. Maybe the soil change and drip system.
Medicine Feather – A lanky Ned Roberts spider
Another bonus – Nona’s Garnet Spider – I have always liked her.
Pueblo Dancer – 7.5 – another Roberts spider but I have always questioned her ID. Her blooms are larger this year with the soil change!
Ruby Stella 7.5
Strutter’s Ball – 7.5 – a late bloom start for this long-time member of my daylily pack
Talon – 7.5 Another old friend from my Roberts collection

Finales have started to add up a little, too. I missed Platinum Pink Palette Whispers. Today was the last of Funny Valentine’s show for 2021.

Platinum Pink finale 7.2
Funny Valentine finale 7.5

Wholly cow! This took all day. It’s 4:30! Hopefully, I got the bugs worked out of my back-up system so it doesn’t take as long tomorrow. I gotta get painting and get my business inventory going! Follow my business blog for updates, too.

Desperado

It is roll-call day!¬† But, first, a dedication.¬† It is camping weekend and I was listening to a song “Desperado” on my ipod.¬† I have always identified with the song.¬† So, I will put El Desperado as our lead photo today.

Desperado – The Eagles

Desperado, why don’t you come to your senses?
You been out ridin’ fences for so long now
Oh, you’re a hard one
I know that you got your reasons
These things that are pleasin’ you
Can hurt you somehow

Don’t you draw the queen of diamonds, boy
She’ll beat you if she’s able
You know the queen of hearts is always your best bet

Now it seems to me, some fine things
Have been laid upon your table
But you only want the ones that you can’t get

Desperado, oh, you ain’t gettin’ no younger
Your pain and your hunger, they’re drivin’ you home
And freedom, oh freedom well, that’s just some people talkin’
Your prison is walking through this world all alone

Don’t your feet get cold in the winter time?
The sky won’t snow and the sun won’t shine
It’s hard to tell the night time from the day
You’re losin’ all your highs and lows
Ain’t it funny how the feeling goes away?

Desperado, why don’t you come to your senses?
Come down from your fences, open the gate
It may be rainin’, but there’s a rainbow above you
You better let somebody love you (let somebody love you)
You better let somebody love you before it’s too late

OK – so new to the garden for the first time in 2018 today is Pizza Crust.¬† I get a little hungry looking at her because I am stuck with low cholesterol pizza that doesn’t have much crust.

The Bud Stands for All Things

Something different tonight before our normal rounds РI am starting off with a poem about flowers that was sent out by the Father of Positive Psychology to a listserve I am on earlier this week.  I love the flower reference and the need to reteach us of our inner loveliness so we bloom, again.  Boy, I identify with that this year.

New Faces, Finales, and Roll Call

It is time for Sunday roll call.  But first, a couple cool new Roberts Spiders.  Meet Mount Echo Sunrise РShe is a big spider that reminds me of Dream Catcher.  This is her first-ever bloom in my yard РI put her in a couple years ago.

MountEchoSunrise7.15.6withDreamCatcher.jpg

Then there is Sante Fe Christmas РAnd she looks like a Christmas bow.  Red, green with curly petals.  I really love her Рtoo bad she lost her other buds.  Despite the improved bloom rate, the drought has taken a toll.

SanteFeChristmas7.15.3.jpg

Next up – Finales.¬† Of course, Santa Fe Christmas is a finale today ūüė¶

Primal Scream is another finale.

PrimalScream7.10.2.jpg

Primal Scream 7.10

Jungle Queen had finale blooms on both pots I have of her.

JungleQueen7.12.1.jpg

Jungle Queen 7.12

Iktomi is another finale.  I have enjoyed seeing the patterns in her offspring.

Iktomi7.9.2.jpg

Iktomi 7.9

Happy Hopi gave a finale bloom today.  I really enjoyed her big, bold, blonde blooms.

HappyHopi7.12.1wAztecFirebird.jpg

Happy Hopi 7.12

Now, on to our roll call.  These are the blooms from 7/9 through today.  But, first, we have about 12 with unbloomed scapes remaining and mid-50s with no bloom/no scape.  We are at 107 cultivators (+/-).  Add 12, and we get close to 120.  I am still hoping for 130 total this year.

It is Sunday and the peak is starting.¬† It will probably take me an hour to get this bog with all the photos for the week published.¬† I am doing it this way so that each daylily comes up on a couple searches of the blog.¬† My job entails creating about 20 template emails a day for the following day – it is a lot of looking up progress and pasting from my last note.¬† Not a creative’s dream.¬† So, when I save my drafts for the day, I have a blank email to note that it is a new day – and that email is always named after a daylily.¬† The most creative 5 minutes/day of my job is picking this daylily.¬† The collages just don’t work.

So РWe will start with the newbies.  Primal Scream is in bloom for the 3rd year.  Last year, the blooms were small and anemic.  She is now in an above ground put inside the Walkway Garden.  I hoped for more scapes, but 2 is OK for this year, gives the fall transplant.  Nothing beats her vibrant color.

Indian Giver was a newbie in the Southwest Garden.  She is a small daylily and was a bonus plant 3 years ago.  She only gets a couple buds every year.  She needs to be dug up and put in a buried pot, but the yucca is close, so not sure how I will get this done.  I would like to have more blooms.  She is adorable.

Last but not least, from my Family Garden is Stephanie Returns.¬† This flower makes my heart sad.¬† Losing a family member who is still alive is horrid.¬† Losing several is bitter and cruel.¬† Please don’t tell people you understand or offer advise while you are surrounded with family.¬† Please don’t tell people God is giving you this lesson for some reason or other.¬† Do bookmark this page and come back here and look at this flower and help send positive vibes to anyone in the universe who had ever known the heartbreak such a loss can bring.

Colorful Big Birds Land in My Garden

Wow!  Thirty bloomers today.  And, yet, the scapes are still everywhere.  I think the Walkway Garden is about to start popping.  And the Southwest and Mural Gardens are close to peak.  It is going to get busier very soon.

Today’s new blooms include two of my favorite Ned Roberts spiders out in the Southwest Garden.¬† Of all my daylilies, Zuni Thunderbird is my favorite.¬† Let me say that again – My favorite daylily of all the 170+ in my yard had its first bloom today.¬† Zuni Thunderbird was one of my original 4 pilot flowers in the Southwest Garden (AKA Yucca Garden).¬† I had Kokopelli first – but quickly added Dream Catcher and Zuni Thunderbird.¬† Of all the Southwest named daylilies I was discovering, those names caught my eye.

ZuniThunderbird6.28.5.jpg

Zuni’s first blooms are never her best – but this year, they are better than I have ever seen them.¬† I think the bug spray helps.¬† No one nibbled her buds and sucked her color out.¬† Why is she my favorite – I like the deep color and she gets some of the most amazing curls you have ever seen.¬† I just love her.

The other big bird is Aztec Firebird.  Aztec Firebird likes where she is planted and puts on a great show every year.  She was added the spring after the pilot, yet she is bigger than most the plants added at that time.  I love her bright colors . . . she is a firebird!

The other newbie for 2018 today is Strutter’s Ball.¬† She is in the mural garden.¬† Added a few years ago and a pretty reliable bloomer.¬† I like her with my solar flower.

StruttersBall6.28.2.jpg

So, tomorrow is my early day.  And, I am dealing with some minor health issues now, so I do need to sleep.  Depending on the Walkway Garden, we should have around the same number of blooms . . . maybe more.  Several of my minis look almost ready.  I am sure I will have at least one in bloom tomorrow.

Other bloomers today: Treasure of the Southwest, Mesa Verde, Pink Rain Dance, Purple Many Faces, Comanche Princess, Black Ice, Pueblo Dancer, Soco Gap, Prairie Blue Eyes, Red Riddle, Wineberry Candy, Jungle Queen, Saratoga Springtime, Colorado Kid, Canyon Colors, Pink and Cream, Yellow Punch, Wild Horses, Funny Valentine, Ruby Spider, Return a Smile, Indian Love Call, Holy Sombrero, Dream Keeper, Ruby Stella, Route 66, and Nurse’s Stethoscope.¬† I think that is it.¬† Goodnight, Big Bird!

Few things are more stunning than daylilies, but . . .

I have had a busy weekend revamping my back porch. ¬†This is the place that my evergreens spend 3 months of the winter. ¬†Spring and fall are temperate¬†in the south-facing fiberglass lean-to style porch. ¬†So, why not have a place to sit and pretend it’s spring?

At any rate, when I did get a chance to go get some pictures of flowers, I was focused on a gorgeous bouquet of Ruby Spider and Return a Smile, when something caught my eye. ¬†It was a bloom on my Easter Lily Cactus. ¬†I brought it home from the Senora a couple months ago. ¬†It’s bloom buds fell off in the colder weather – but I guess we are Senora hot now.

New to the yard for this year (and doing much better than last year) is Strutter’s Ball. ¬†A common daylily, but still a favorite big purple-red bloom.

StruttersBall3.6.18

With my work schedule this year, I am sticking primarily with new blooms for photos. ¬†I had 7 varieties in bloom in the yard today. ¬†I take photos, but don’t have time for posting more than I do. ¬†So, please enjoy these two beauties.

PS – I named my back porch the Senora Room!

Estimated Day of First Daylily: Tomorrow

Stella in half bloomed, so I think it’s safe to say my first daylily of the year shows up tomorrow. I have to give up AM news for camera time in the garden. It’s better, the garden.

20170606_204723.jpg

I killed my very first Stella a few years back. Then, I got into daylilies, and Stella seemed too common. But they bloom all season. So, last year, I hit the sales and got a few.

I have a growing number of scapes popping up. It’s like watching popcorn start to pop. Kokopelli, Soco Gap, Papa Long legs, ¬†Hopi Jewel, Happy Returns, Ruby Spider, Chama Valley, Strutters Ball, ¬†Wild Horses, Ghost Ranch, Funny Valentine, ¬†Inwood, Jungle Queen, Return A Smile. All have scapes. And, it’s just the beginning. ¬†I guessed Juneteenth (16th) for bloom 1. Off by 9 days. I’m good with it.

I have a lot of friends who think I’m a Lily expert. Daylilies are not really lilies. They are more closely related to Olathe Sweet Corn. And, I hope they do as well in my high desert garden.
