So, I had a record number of cultivators in bloom the day before my trip, but no time to blog. Tomorrow, I’m home but too late to see any blooms. So, here is the 7/16 batch. Honestly, I don’t remember which were new bloom, but I’ll try. It’ll be good to see what’s new on Sunday!

Wow – It will be August next weekend. The daylily peak has come and gone. The cultivators were in the teens today . . . a massive drop off from 2-3 weeks ago. It is funny how the first 3 weeks of June are slow progress, then it explodes, then it goes to just a few here and there for months.

Today, we had one new cultivator. Heirloom Heaven bloomed for the first time in 2018. She is an adorable late-blooming mini. She is my last unbloomed scape on a cultivator that hasn’t bloomed yet. This could be it. It seems like I usually get some August scapes . . . not many, but a handful. I don’t know with this drought, though.

And, I had a rude awakening last night – because Mount Echo Sunrise doesn’t look anything like Mount Echo Sunrise. I looked at her tag, and she has two. The other one says Moon over Chimayo . . . and she looks like that one. So, I assume . . .

Attachment, Separation, and Loss

Today, it is just finales. Worked today . . . big reorg at work. Like starting over. I imagine a lot of chaos before it settles into anything with a rhythm, again. I’ll lose most the students I have worked with for two years. Finales remind me of something one of my instructors in midwifery school taught me once – Life is like a placenta: It is all about attachment, separation, and loss. I am attached to my blooms . . . and then they go away. Sometimes they are back in a year, and sometimes they don’t bloom every year. Life is unpredictable. But, there is a cycle to it. Can you believe that my poinsettias and amaryllis come in next month to start their rest cycle? Heavens, time to gear up my bloom closet for the <12 hours of light per day for the poinsettias soon. They have loved summer in the yard. Hope for a colorful Christmas while the daylilies sleep.

It is roll-call day! But, first, a dedication. It is camping weekend and I was listening to a song “Desperado” on my ipod. I have always identified with the song. So, I will put El Desperado as our lead photo today.

New Faces, Finales, and Roll Call

It is time for Sunday roll call. But first, a couple cool new Roberts Spiders. Meet Mount Echo Sunrise – She is a big spider that reminds me of Dream Catcher. This is her first-ever bloom in my yard – I put her in a couple years ago.

Then there is Sante Fe Christmas – And she looks like a Christmas bow. Red, green with curly petals. I really love her – too bad she lost her other buds. Despite the improved bloom rate, the drought has taken a toll.

Next up – Finales. Of course, Santa Fe Christmas is a finale today 😦

Tis the Season!

Oh, man, I jinxed myself. Last night, I said that we only needed 12 more cultivators to bloom to match last year’s total bloom rate. We need 79 cultivators total to tie! My count says we are now at 75. Last night, we were at 67. Do the math – we had 8 new cultivators today. Oh, help. And, I went and had my labs drawn before work and still got everything photographed. All we need is 4 more tomorrow – and judging from buds, we will surpass last year’s bloom rate on July 4th! Last year, we did not have this many different cultivators until November!

So, away we go with new intros. I had two new Ned Roberts spiders today. The first one is Taco Twister. She reminds me of Happy Hopi – guessing they are related. It is her first bloom ever in my yard. The Southwest Garden upgrades last year are primarily responsible for the better bloom rate – and Taco Twister is one of the helpers!

The Walkway Garden is starting to pop – so that was where the newest blooms came from. Most of those are old, familiar faces. The first one is Mellon Balls. I have had her a couple years – she was a bonus mini.

Prairie Wildfire is one of my older daylilies that got moved to the Walkway garden a couple years ago and she is so much happier. Love her red!

Then there is my sweet little pastel Lullaby Baby. I have had her several years, too. Her blooms are much healthier looking now that she is in a pot.

The Rainy Season (Monsoons!)

Yesterday, I believe we got our first monsoon of the year. They are a couple weeks late – and I have missed the cooling off effect that they bring to the evening. I am curious to see how the this impacts the blooming.

Today brought 19 cultivators. Two are new – and I mean new, new. They have not bloomed here before; both were added last fall. The first one represents my granddaughter, Maia, in the family section. Her name is Mayan Poppy. I love the pastel colors.

The other one was a small one fan gift plant that I wasn’t sure would make it. And, if it did, I did not anticipate blooms this year. This is Heavenly Curls. As a nurse-midwife, I look at some of these and wonder how they ever bloom without a c-section.

The collage today was kind of fun. I paired like-looking flowers. Some were closer matches than others. Gives it a different look.

Still no news. Thank heaven for my garden. I believe that brings me to 53 blooms for the year. I may just make that mid-60s (50%) goal. Some of my later bloomers are getting scapes! Yea!!!

Climbing to the Peak of Daylily Color

If yesterday was a little quiet (for July) in my garden, today was a bit overwhelming. There were several new faces.

Thin Man bloomed for the first time ever – the biggest bloom (12 inches) in my garden.

One of my Ned Roberts Southwest spiders also showed his colors for the first time ever in my yard. Meet Aztec Firebird.

And, a nice little addition called Pick of the Litter was also a first-time in my yard bloomer today. Funny, this was a gift plant and I don’t remember the plant it came with – or if that plant has bloomed.

First blooms for 2016 in my existing daylilies included one that I don’t have a name for – so I decided to call it Montrose Sunset. I picked this up when I xeriscaped a few years ago . . . before I was a true hobbiest. And, I cannot find the name but I like the bloom a lot.

Prelude to Love is a pretty dark red/purple bloom that reappears each year, as well.

Strutter’s Ball is one I added last year and (like its neighbors, Inwood and Funny Valentine) it is astruggling to produce blooms this year. I decided today that when my blues finish blooming in a week or two, I will switch their locations and see what happens. The issue, I believe, is figuring out which pots the sprinkler system over-waters, and which it under-waters. And, then, balancing that.

And, here is today’s collage. I tried to put this is semi-rainbow order. It is a lot of color, for sure. The peak has come to this yard on the Colorado Plateau.

Hey, folks, that is eight new blooms in the yard today. That puts me at circa 45 different blooms this year. (That means about 90 have not bloomed – but many are year ones or small year twos.) I only need 20+ more to hit 50%. I have a lot of scapes – so maybe . . . stay tuned.

Singing the Blues

Today, all three of my near blues (with scapes) were in bloom; Blue Beat, Mildred Mitchell, and The Colorado Kid. (Sounds like a rock band.) They have all bloomed before this year, so I highlighted them in todays garden collage. I did want to share a large view of Blue Beat before the first rays of sun hit her. Very blue-looking!

I had two new blooms and neither looked as healthy as I would like. Bugs, heat, water issues, etc. Who knows? They are pretty flowers and hopefully they will have their true colors shining through very soon.

Before I sign off, let me just say that I am writing this blog to share my experiences being a daylily hobbiest in the desert of Western Colorado. The soil is clay, so I have learned to amend it with good soil and water crystals. They help hold the moisture in – and I had my best garlic harvest ever after adding them to the mix. However, there can always be too much of a good thing and the crystals can harbor root rot is the drainage isn’t good, The last week, Colorado Kid has been fading. Today, I threw out the rotten dirt and cleaned up the roots. Hopefully, I didn’t over correct. It’s hard for humans to get the right balance of moisture in a place where mother nature falls short. And, that is the adventure. (RIP Navajo Rodeo – I am not sure what got you but something did 😦 )
