Faster!

My new little 2 in 1 laptop showed-up.  Same brand and size as my last one – different model.  Five years since I updated.  It is faster – and my last computer got glitchy and finally lost its wifi driver.  Plus it moved miscellaneous files to my memory card with the last update. This model was less expensive – by a lot. But, sick dogs, car wrecks and travel meant a budget model.

I need to get on and save stuff other places.  You know, like my daylily software.  I hope this Windows S mode will allow me to do that.  Honestly, I hate new technology like I hate new hiking shoes.  You have to break them in before they are comfortable.

So, back to daylily land . . . nearly 11 today.  Photo editing is faster, but I am several days behind, again, due to no computer access

I teach all day tomorrow . . . until evening.  So, for now, enjoy the photos.

Oh, PS – Blogging was a tad rough.  I don’t like the way Microsoft Edge and WordPress are interacting.  Maybe it is just my learning curve.  I did name my new computer Zuni Thunderbird after my favorite daylily.  I always name my computers . . . but never after a daylily.

Best of Intentions

I had the best intentions of writing a blog about my New Mexico named daylilies tonight – it’s too late.  I had the best of intentions getting to bed on time last night – until the police scene unfolded outside my bedroom window at 10PM (right next to my Southwest daylily garden . . . was that really a SWAT truck?)  I had so many good intentions about a smooth start to the semester and some of those have been overruled by life.

Tonight, I must get to bed.  Another very full day tomorrow.  I had intentions of slowing down . . . yea, right.  I work in rural America.  Someday, I’ll get ‘er done.  I’ll retire and play with daylilies between road trips.

Adios8.14.1.jpg

Adios Albuquerque 8/14

So, tonight I leave you with my favorite picture of Adios Albuquerque – the sun was perfect for the 7 PM shot.  The 7 AM shot missed the mark.  The lead photo is Treasure of the Southwest with a nice sun angle, too.  Now, I intend to sleep.  Wish me luck.

I’m Back and Overwhelmed by Daylilies

Life changes. This summer is so different from last year. Jobs, schedules, weather. So, I returned from Utah yesterday afternoon to an overwhelming thunderstorm that wiped out a lot of yesterday’s blooms. I decided to start fresh today, kind of. I leave for a work conference in Atlanta on Wednesday. Next Sunday, I can start my regular routine for daylily season. Lol.

So, a lot of Premier blooms (to me) today. Let’s start with my Ned Roberts spider collection:

Apache Bandana 7/14

Black Arrowhead 7/14

Chokecherry Mountain 7/14

Mount Echo Sunrise 7/14

Feather Woman 7/14

Navajo Rodeo 7/14

Wineberry Candy 7/14

Prairie Wildfire 7/14

That’s like almost 40 new cultivars since I left 9 days ago! Overwhelmed doesn’t say it with another trip coming up. I have no clue on bloom rate, but the cold, wet spring mostly seems to have helped.

Ok, that’s enough. Battery is dead. Several Finales while gone: Saratoga Springtime, Dream Keeper, Chama Valley.

If you are going to miss the start of peak bloom, Utah is a great place to do it. Also amazing colors.

Vaca Day Lilies

Today, we started our weeklong camping road trip through southern Utah. So, I’ll miss 5 days of blooms. But, I think there will be plenty left when I return next week.

Desperado

It is roll-call day!  But, first, a dedication.  It is camping weekend and I was listening to a song “Desperado” on my ipod.  I have always identified with the song.  So, I will put El Desperado as our lead photo today.

Desperado – The Eagles

Desperado, why don’t you come to your senses?
You been out ridin’ fences for so long now
Oh, you’re a hard one
I know that you got your reasons
These things that are pleasin’ you
Can hurt you somehow

Don’t you draw the queen of diamonds, boy
She’ll beat you if she’s able
You know the queen of hearts is always your best bet

Now it seems to me, some fine things
Have been laid upon your table
But you only want the ones that you can’t get

Desperado, oh, you ain’t gettin’ no younger
Your pain and your hunger, they’re drivin’ you home
And freedom, oh freedom well, that’s just some people talkin’
Your prison is walking through this world all alone

Don’t your feet get cold in the winter time?
The sky won’t snow and the sun won’t shine
It’s hard to tell the night time from the day
You’re losin’ all your highs and lows
Ain’t it funny how the feeling goes away?

Desperado, why don’t you come to your senses?
Come down from your fences, open the gate
It may be rainin’, but there’s a rainbow above you
You better let somebody love you (let somebody love you)
You better let somebody love you before it’s too late

OK – so new to the garden for the first time in 2018 today is Pizza Crust.  I get a little hungry looking at her because I am stuck with low cholesterol pizza that doesn’t have much crust.

New Faces, Finales, and Roll Call

It is time for Sunday roll call.  But first, a couple cool new Roberts Spiders.  Meet Mount Echo Sunrise – She is a big spider that reminds me of Dream Catcher.  This is her first-ever bloom in my yard – I put her in a couple years ago.

MountEchoSunrise7.15.6withDreamCatcher.jpg

Then there is Sante Fe Christmas – And she looks like a Christmas bow.  Red, green with curly petals.  I really love her – too bad she lost her other buds.  Despite the improved bloom rate, the drought has taken a toll.

SanteFeChristmas7.15.3.jpg

Next up – Finales.  Of course, Santa Fe Christmas is a finale today 😦

Primal Scream is another finale.

PrimalScream7.10.2.jpg

Jungle Queen had finale blooms on both pots I have of her.

Iktomi is another finale.  I have enjoyed seeing the patterns in her offspring.

Happy Hopi gave a finale bloom today.  I really enjoyed her big, bold, blonde blooms.

HappyHopi7.12.1wAztecFirebird.jpg

Happy Hopi 7.12

Now, on to our roll call.  These are the blooms from 7/9 through today.  But, first, we have about 12 with unbloomed scapes remaining and mid-50s with no bloom/no scape.  We are at 107 cultivators (+/-).  Add 12, and we get close to 120.  I am still hoping for 130 total this year.

July 1: Daylily Roll Call!

It is Sunday and the peak is starting.  It will probably take me an hour to get this bog with all the photos for the week published.  I am doing it this way so that each daylily comes up on a couple searches of the blog.  My job entails creating about 20 template emails a day for the following day – it is a lot of looking up progress and pasting from my last note.  Not a creative’s dream.  So, when I save my drafts for the day, I have a blank email to note that it is a new day – and that email is always named after a daylily.  The most creative 5 minutes/day of my job is picking this daylily.  The collages just don’t work.

So – We will start with the newbies.  Primal Scream is in bloom for the 3rd year.  Last year, the blooms were small and anemic.  She is now in an above ground put inside the Walkway Garden.  I hoped for more scapes, but 2 is OK for this year, gives the fall transplant.  Nothing beats her vibrant color.

Indian Giver was a newbie in the Southwest Garden.  She is a small daylily and was a bonus plant 3 years ago.  She only gets a couple buds every year.  She needs to be dug up and put in a buried pot, but the yucca is close, so not sure how I will get this done.  I would like to have more blooms.  She is adorable.

Last but not least, from my Family Garden is Stephanie Returns.  This flower makes my heart sad.  Losing a family member who is still alive is horrid.  Losing several is bitter and cruel.  Please don’t tell people you understand or offer advise while you are surrounded with family.  Please don’t tell people God is giving you this lesson for some reason or other.  Do bookmark this page and come back here and look at this flower and help send positive vibes to anyone in the universe who had ever known the heartbreak such a loss can bring.

Horses, Canyons, Rodeos, and Our Blooms for the Week!

Summer is here! I got home from camping 6 hours ago and am still trying to get everything done for the weekend!  When I don’t take photos in the morning, the blooms are pretty sunburned by noon.  And we had wind today.   And single digit humidity.  So, for today there were 5 new blooms.

Wild Horses is a favorite, dependable bloomer.  I have had her 3 years and she puts on quite a show.  Can you see the wild horses in her pattern?

So, Chaco Canyon bloomed when we returned from this same camping adventure last year.  I love her stripes!

A brand new face for this year is Navajo Rodeo.  Waiting 3 years to see some of these has taken patience.  She reminds me of Talon, but redder.  I am sure they are related.

Ruby Spider is one of my oldest blooms, and always a favorite.  She is huge, and oh so red!

And little Happy Returns is back.  She is such a delicate little yellow trumpet.

So far, that makes 36 that have bloomed in the yard.  Of 170-something.  21% or so of my cultivators have bloomed so far.  Tomorrow, it looks like more new faces will join the count!

Today, the Rain Came

Today the rain came.  Not much rain . . . but enough to wet the soil and put some drops on the peddles of my bloomers.  It was cool, I worked in daylily labels.  I decided to put the same metal labels i have in the Southwest garden in all my daylilies.  I have too many, I gotta tell you.  Anyway, I ended up short labels for every daylily, so need to reorder.  My plastic labels did not hold up for year 3 – and I rearranged some of the plants in the walkway garden.  So, I have a few I won’t be sure of until the blooms come.  But, progress.

Labels

Today, I had the first 2018 bloom on Mesa Verde.  This flower was chosen because of her name.  Yes, once I figured out a lot had cool southwestern names, I went out of my way to find her.  The bloom is one of the most ruffly in my collection.  She didn’t even open all the way today . . . maybe the rain and cool weather.  Anyway, the bloom was in the division I put in the Southwest garden last fall.  My pot isn’t that close yet.

And, another very cool flower – Hope Jewel – opened in the Southwest Garden.  I love the colors on this one.  She was a gift plant a couple years ago.  She bloomed in 2016 and 2017, but her anemic looking blooms last year were one of my motivators to do the buried pots out there.
