On With the Show, This is It!

As the garden rapidly accelerates to peek, I look around to see my lawn that needs mowing, my hedge that needs clipped. Oh, but the daylilies have been rehearsing for the show for months. How can I ignore them? I need a be 3 people in July.

Bunches of premiere blooms today. Where to start. Two new Ned Roberts spiders, Cheyenne Eyes and Navajo Rodeo.

Cheyenne Eyes 7.3

I divided Cheyenne Eyes last fall and she struggled this spring. She produced 1 shore scape with 2 buds. At least I’ll see a couple of blooms.

Navajo Rodeo 7.3

Navajo Rodeo has not bloomed in at least a couple of years. Before that, she was reliable. Good to have her back.

The Colorado Kid 7.3

The Colorado Kid, our blog namesake bloomed. She is one of my favorite near blues!

Holy Sombrero 7.3

Holy Sombrero is a fun, huge yellow bloom. Nice bonus daylily several years ago.

Catherine Irene 7.3

Catherine Irene, same name as my momma, bloomed today.

Lullaby Baby 7.3

Lullaby Baby, a sweet pastel color, was another new face.

Strutter’s Ball 7.3

Strutter’s Ball also showed up to the dance.

If I keep getting 5-7 new ones/day, it will quickly crescendo. A week, maybe. Lol, I’ll be camping. But, only miss 2 full days. On with the show, this is it!

July Daylily Roundup A-M

The next two posts are a listing of the daylilies that have bloomed ANYTIME during July – even if they started in June. It is a large list but also a colorful one. I believe only 3 of my cultivators were totally done in June – Saratoga Springtime, Scorpio and yellow Stella de Oro.

If you like Ned Roberts cultivators, you have come to the right place because I have about 70 of them, and most (except Navajo Curls and Adios Albuquerque) that are going to bloom the year have bloomed sometime during July.

I went to the rodeo here last night, so I am all practiced-up and ready to go.

Wax Daylily Booms of Independence Day

Today started with a parade and will end with fireworks. Must be July 4th, In between, I visited my daylilies. I think in July in Colorado (or the desert States) that we should call them 7-11 lilies, because after about 11 AM, the blooms start to melt. I mean, they literally look like melting wax to me. Our UV is just so high for them here when the humidity drops towards the single digits. Maybe that is why I take so many photos and paint the blooms. There is no hanging out with them all day because it is just too hot and I melt, too.

Anyway – I had 43 in bloom today, including 3 premiers. No finales today. Oh, and add Maya Cha Cha = who premiered yesterday but I missed her photo with the camera. I actually take pictures with both cell and camera. I post the cell shots to my Facebook page ASAP. That is a great back-up to the camera and helps me remember what is what if I get behind on camera shots. Maya is on the phone yesterday, but not in my computer library. I guess that puts us at 76, which is a patriotic number.

Bella Lugosi premier 7.4
Just Plum Happy premier 7.4 – One of my very first daylilies. I divided her and put half in the boarder garden. The potted half died this year, but the one in the ground is doing OK.
Lullaby Baby premier 7.4 – a favorite pastel daylily
Maya Cha Cha premier 7.3
Pink Enchilada premier 7.4
Pink Rain Dance premier 7.4

It is hard to believe only 40% of my daylilies have bloomed. I probably have a dozen or so without scapes so who knows if they will skip or be late? If they don’t bloom – that means we have 92 more premiers and our bloom rate will be 93%. That’s an A in my book. I am just waiting for water cost to shoot up because they declared a state of drought emergency in my part of the State yesterday.

Keep on blooming. Happy 4th!

Counting Flowers on the Wall; That Don’t Bother Me At All!

So, I had a record number of cultivators in bloom the day before my trip, but no time to blog. Tomorrow, I’m home but too late to see any blooms. So, here is the 7/16 batch. Honestly, I don’t remember which were new bloom, but I’ll try. It’ll be good to see what’s new on Sunday!

Here Come the Monsoons!

Today, I had 63 in bloom. It’s a record. Despite the wet, cold spring that did in a couple of my cultivars, my blooms so far are numerous. For a late start season, we are catching up! And, now, our monsoon rains are assisting with hydration.

I have several that are first blooms ever this year.

For time’s sake, I’m just doing Premiers tonight:

My lesson – water early and often. And, with any luck, the monsoons show up like they have this year.

Last Sunday in July

Wow – It will be August next weekend.  The daylily peak has come and gone.  The cultivators were in the teens today . . . a massive drop off from 2-3 weeks ago.  It is funny how the first 3 weeks of June are slow progress, then it explodes, then it goes to just a few here and there for months.

Today, we had one new cultivator.  Heirloom Heaven bloomed for the first time in 2018.  She is an adorable late-blooming mini.  She is my last unbloomed scape on a cultivator that hasn’t bloomed yet.  This could be it.  It seems like I usually get some August scapes . . . not many, but a handful.  I don’t know with this drought, though.

HeirloomHeaves7.29.1.jpg

Heirloom Heaven 7.29

And, I had a rude awakening last night – because Mount Echo Sunrise doesn’t look anything like Mount Echo Sunrise.  I looked at her tag, and she has two.  The other one says Moon over Chimayo . . . and she looks like that one.  So, I assume . . .

Desperado

It is roll-call day!  But, first, a dedication.  It is camping weekend and I was listening to a song “Desperado” on my ipod.  I have always identified with the song.  So, I will put El Desperado as our lead photo today.

Desperado – The Eagles

Desperado, why don’t you come to your senses?
You been out ridin’ fences for so long now
Oh, you’re a hard one
I know that you got your reasons
These things that are pleasin’ you
Can hurt you somehow

Don’t you draw the queen of diamonds, boy
She’ll beat you if she’s able
You know the queen of hearts is always your best bet

Now it seems to me, some fine things
Have been laid upon your table
But you only want the ones that you can’t get

Desperado, oh, you ain’t gettin’ no younger
Your pain and your hunger, they’re drivin’ you home
And freedom, oh freedom well, that’s just some people talkin’
Your prison is walking through this world all alone

Don’t your feet get cold in the winter time?
The sky won’t snow and the sun won’t shine
It’s hard to tell the night time from the day
You’re losin’ all your highs and lows
Ain’t it funny how the feeling goes away?

Desperado, why don’t you come to your senses?
Come down from your fences, open the gate
It may be rainin’, but there’s a rainbow above you
You better let somebody love you (let somebody love you)
You better let somebody love you before it’s too late

OK – so new to the garden for the first time in 2018 today is Pizza Crust.  I get a little hungry looking at her because I am stuck with low cholesterol pizza that doesn’t have much crust.

New Faces, Finales, and Roll Call

It is time for Sunday roll call.  But first, a couple cool new Roberts Spiders.  Meet Mount Echo Sunrise – She is a big spider that reminds me of Dream Catcher.  This is her first-ever bloom in my yard – I put her in a couple years ago.

MountEchoSunrise7.15.6withDreamCatcher.jpg

Then there is Sante Fe Christmas – And she looks like a Christmas bow.  Red, green with curly petals.  I really love her – too bad she lost her other buds.  Despite the improved bloom rate, the drought has taken a toll.

SanteFeChristmas7.15.3.jpg

Next up – Finales.  Of course, Santa Fe Christmas is a finale today 😦

Primal Scream is another finale.

Jungle Queen had finale blooms on both pots I have of her.

Happy Hopi gave a finale bloom today.  I really enjoyed her big, bold, blonde blooms.

HappyHopi7.12.1wAztecFirebird.jpg

Now, on to our roll call.  These are the blooms from 7/9 through today.  But, first, we have about 12 with unbloomed scapes remaining and mid-50s with no bloom/no scape.  We are at 107 cultivators (+/-).  Add 12, and we get close to 120.  I am still hoping for 130 total this year.

Tis the Season!

Oh, man, I jinxed myself.  Last night, I said that we only needed 12 more cultivators to bloom to match last year’s total bloom rate.  We need 79 cultivators total to tie!  My count says we are now at 75.  Last night, we were at 67.  Do the math – we had 8 new cultivators today.  Oh, help.  And, I went and had my labs drawn before work and still got everything photographed.  All we need is 4 more tomorrow – and judging from buds, we will surpass last year’s bloom rate on July 4th!  Last year, we did not have this many different cultivators until November!

So, away we go with new intros.  I had two new Ned Roberts spiders today.  The first one is Taco Twister.  She reminds me of Happy Hopi – guessing they are related.  It is her first bloom ever in my yard.  The Southwest Garden upgrades last year are primarily responsible for the better bloom rate – and Taco Twister is one of the helpers!

Shape Shifter also made her first-ever visit today to the Southwest Garden.  She lives up to her name.

The Walkway Garden is starting to pop – so that was where the newest blooms came from.  Most of those are old, familiar faces.  The first one is Mellon Balls.  I have had her a couple years – she was a bonus mini.

Prairie Wildfire is one of my older daylilies that got moved to the Walkway garden a couple years ago and she is so much happier.  Love her red!

Then there is my sweet little pastel Lullaby Baby.  I have had her several years, too.  Her blooms are much healthier looking now that she is in a pot.

Pick of the Litter was a bonus daylily a couple years ago – she has been a reliable bloomer even before the pots.  She will do even better this year, I think.

Black Eyed Susan is in a planter out in the front yard with Stella and Candy Cane Dreams.  She put on quite a show last year, so I can hardly wait.

Mildred Mitchell is over in the Blues section of the Walkway Garden.  She is an older cultivator that I added a 2-3 years ago – at the same time as my other near blues.  I like her flair.
