Desperado

It is roll-call day!  But, first, a dedication.  It is camping weekend and I was listening to a song “Desperado” on my ipod.  I have always identified with the song.  So, I will put El Desperado as our lead photo today.

Desperado – The Eagles

Desperado, why don’t you come to your senses?
You been out ridin’ fences for so long now
Oh, you’re a hard one
I know that you got your reasons
These things that are pleasin’ you
Can hurt you somehow

Don’t you draw the queen of diamonds, boy
She’ll beat you if she’s able
You know the queen of hearts is always your best bet

Now it seems to me, some fine things
Have been laid upon your table
But you only want the ones that you can’t get

Desperado, oh, you ain’t gettin’ no younger
Your pain and your hunger, they’re drivin’ you home
And freedom, oh freedom well, that’s just some people talkin’
Your prison is walking through this world all alone

Don’t your feet get cold in the winter time?
The sky won’t snow and the sun won’t shine
It’s hard to tell the night time from the day
You’re losin’ all your highs and lows
Ain’t it funny how the feeling goes away?

Desperado, why don’t you come to your senses?
Come down from your fences, open the gate
It may be rainin’, but there’s a rainbow above you
You better let somebody love you (let somebody love you)
You better let somebody love you before it’s too late

OK – so new to the garden for the first time in 2018 today is Pizza Crust.  I get a little hungry looking at her because I am stuck with low cholesterol pizza that doesn’t have much crust.

New Faces, Finales, and Roll Call

It is time for Sunday roll call.  But first, a couple cool new Roberts Spiders.  Meet Mount Echo Sunrise – She is a big spider that reminds me of Dream Catcher.  This is her first-ever bloom in my yard – I put her in a couple years ago.

MountEchoSunrise7.15.6withDreamCatcher.jpg

Then there is Sante Fe Christmas – And she looks like a Christmas bow.  Red, green with curly petals.  I really love her – too bad she lost her other buds.  Despite the improved bloom rate, the drought has taken a toll.

SanteFeChristmas7.15.3.jpg

Next up – Finales.  Of course, Santa Fe Christmas is a finale today 😦

Primal Scream is another finale.

Happy Hopi gave a finale bloom today.  I really enjoyed her big, bold, blonde blooms.

Now, on to our roll call.  These are the blooms from 7/9 through today.  But, first, we have about 12 with unbloomed scapes remaining and mid-50s with no bloom/no scape.  We are at 107 cultivators (+/-).  Add 12, and we get close to 120.  I am still hoping for 130 total this year.

Tis the Season!

Oh, man, I jinxed myself.  Last night, I said that we only needed 12 more cultivators to bloom to match last year’s total bloom rate.  We need 79 cultivators total to tie!  My count says we are now at 75.  Last night, we were at 67.  Do the math – we had 8 new cultivators today.  Oh, help.  And, I went and had my labs drawn before work and still got everything photographed.  All we need is 4 more tomorrow – and judging from buds, we will surpass last year’s bloom rate on July 4th!  Last year, we did not have this many different cultivators until November!

So, away we go with new intros.  I had two new Ned Roberts spiders today.  The first one is Taco Twister.  She reminds me of Happy Hopi – guessing they are related.  It is her first bloom ever in my yard.  The Southwest Garden upgrades last year are primarily responsible for the better bloom rate – and Taco Twister is one of the helpers!

TacoTwister7.3.4.jpg

Taco Twister 7/3

Shape Shifter also made her first-ever visit today to the Southwest Garden.  She lives up to her name.

ShapeShifter7.3.4.jpg

Shape Shifter 7/3

The Walkway Garden is starting to pop – so that was where the newest blooms came from.  Most of those are old, familiar faces.  The first one is Mellon Balls.  I have had her a couple years – she was a bonus mini.

MellowBalls7.3.1.jpg

Mellon Balls 7/3

Prairie Wildfire is one of my older daylilies that got moved to the Walkway garden a couple years ago and she is so much happier.  Love her red!

PrairieWildfire7.3.2.jpg

Then there is my sweet little pastel Lullaby Baby.  I have had her several years, too.  Her blooms are much healthier looking now that she is in a pot.

LullabyeBaby7.3.1.jpg

Lullabye Baby 7/3

Pick of the Litter was a bonus daylily a couple years ago – she has been a reliable bloomer even before the pots.  She will do even better this year, I think.

PickoftheLitter7.3.1.jpg

Black Eyed Susan is in a planter out in the front yard with Stella and Candy Cane Dreams.  She put on quite a show last year, so I can hardly wait.

BlackEyedSusan7.3.1.jpg

Mildred Mitchell is over in the Blues section of the Walkway Garden.  She is an older cultivator that I added a 2-3 years ago – at the same time as my other near blues.  I like her flair.

Other blooms today were Talon, Comanche Princess. Navajo Rodeo, Chokecherry Mountain, Hopi Jewel, Happy Hopi, Zuni Thunderbird, Aztec Firebird, Catherine Irene, Happy Returns, Stephanie Returns, Alabama Jubilee, Stella, Route 66, Ruby Stella, The Colorado Kid, Bluegrass Music, Canyon Colors, Passionate Returns, Early Bird Cardinal, Red Riddle, Lady Fingers, Ruby Spider, Return a Smile, Funny Valentine, Petite Petticoats, Indian Giver, Yellow Punch, Wineberry Candy, Wild Horses,

Put the Lime in the Coconut!

My computer just blitzed my first post – all but the last caption done.  I think I could use a little lime in the coconut right now.  At any rate, that song was going through my head this AM when I started looking at my garden.  I think it was the sight of Lime Frost surrounded by two near-white daylilies, Marque Moon and Lullaby Baby.  I guess the song was about a cure for morning sickness???  (Well, that is not my problem, although I treated it a lot during my midwifery practice years.)  The new bloom, Melon Balls, sort of added to the fruity theme.  This was a gift plant – and it looks like melon balls floating in my drink!

MelonBalls3.7.24

That was the only new bloom today.  The other one of that I am highlighting today is Mesa Verde.  This cultivator has been blooming for a full month – and I have over 80 pictures of these gorgeous blooms.  Unfortunately, today is the last bud unless she gets new life later in the summer.  Every time I snap the shutter, I wonder how I will ever paint this on a Christmas present?  Oh, I will.  And, it will be a challenge to capture the full aura of this blossom.

MesaVerde76.7.24

The other highlight today is Zuni Thunderbird, one of my Ned Roberts babies.  This one started with insect damaged blooms and I was less than impressed.  But, the blooms have straightened out and the spots are mostly gone.  I love the curls!  This will be on a present, too, me thinks.  (PS – Sounds like my tropical drink is up on the Colorado Plateau somewhere today!)

So, for the collage today, I tried to get similar poses where the flower anatomy would allow me.  Lucky 13 today.  Now, off to do the work of a farmer and work on flower pot drainage.
