Short and Sweet

Tonight, my blog will be short and sweet so that I can get enough shut-eye. I will tell you that I wish my evening hadn’t been such a wreck. My old dog is still sick and needs to go into isolation and get treated again. I have to clean everything with bleach, again. If I didn’t work hard at my day job or if I had help around the house . . . tonight it seemed overwhelming.

Land of Enchantment 6.22.20

I feel a little underwhelmed by my bud count. I still have about 110. That number has been flat for a week. Unlike Coronavirus, I hope for another spike in scapes. And, I must have broken a scape off of Heron’s Cove while working on the drip system. Ugh.

The Colorado Kid 6.22.20

My premiers – the mascot for my blog, The Colorado Kid opened today. She is my favorite near blue.

Pink and Cream 6.22.20

And, simple Pink and Cream, another Stella cousin, had her premier today.

Nurse’s Stethoscope 6.22.20

I had 12 total. Still a lot of yellow trumpets. Let’s see what the sun brings tomorrow.

Wild Horses 6.22.20

As the World Turns

It is the longest day of the year for another hour or so in Colorado. Summer is here – the season of the daylily explosion. And, now the world takes us slowly to that dark, cold December day a few days before Christmas.

Wild Horses 6.20.20

It wasn’t a real exciting day in the garden. I had one premier – Wild Horses. I really like the shape and color of her blooms. She is one of my favorite on the back porch.

Funny Valentine 6.20.20

I also am so disappointed in myself for not watching my scape when I went to get some sedum cuttings and accidentally knocked 3 buds off Jungle Queen. Every summer I do something like that and it hangs with me for a bit.

Mesa Verde 6.20.20

The good news is that the new sedum garden looks good. It is a little garden made of wine bottles with a new mural of a Navajo Tree of Life. It is the back side of my garage so I never painted there before – but it is my view from where I sit to eat. So, it’ll be fun.

Saratoga Springtime 6.20.20

Tomorrow, I extend my drip system to an area where my pots only get sprinkler water. It isn’t enough during the hot, dry weather. At this point, it may be too late to influence scape formation, but it could keep my buds from drying up before they bloom.

Golden Stella 6.20.20
Yellow Stella 6.20.20
Yellow Punch 6.20.20

Any, hey, I own mother nature 3 buds now. And, that is the way the world turns.

Dusky Daylilies: (when your plane lands at 7:50 PM)

What a long day. I started at 6:30 AM ET and it’s now tomorrow ET. But, I’m back on MT. And, I’ve been home since 8 PM MT. It’s the time of year where there is still a little light. So, of course, I raced to take daylily photos. Not the best photography AND the poor flowers have had a long day, too. I had 72 cultivators today – it’s another record breaker.

I’m just do Premiers because I’m fading, too.

New Faces, Finales, and Roll Call

It is time for Sunday roll call.  But first, a couple cool new Roberts Spiders.  Meet Mount Echo Sunrise – She is a big spider that reminds me of Dream Catcher.  This is her first-ever bloom in my yard – I put her in a couple years ago.

MountEchoSunrise7.15.6withDreamCatcher.jpg

Then there is Sante Fe Christmas – And she looks like a Christmas bow.  Red, green with curly petals.  I really love her – too bad she lost her other buds.  Despite the improved bloom rate, the drought has taken a toll.

SanteFeChristmas7.15.3.jpg

Next up – Finales.  Of course, Santa Fe Christmas is a finale today 😦

Primal Scream is another finale.

PrimalScream7.10.2.jpg

Primal Scream 7.10

Jungle Queen had finale blooms on both pots I have of her.

JungleQueen7.12.1.jpg

Iktomi is another finale.  I have enjoyed seeing the patterns in her offspring.

Happy Hopi gave a finale bloom today.  I really enjoyed her big, bold, blonde blooms.

HappyHopi7.12.1wAztecFirebird.jpg

Now, on to our roll call.  These are the blooms from 7/9 through today.  But, first, we have about 12 with unbloomed scapes remaining and mid-50s with no bloom/no scape.  We are at 107 cultivators (+/-).  Add 12, and we get close to 120.  I am still hoping for 130 total this year.

July 1: Daylily Roll Call!

It is Sunday and the peak is starting.  It will probably take me an hour to get this bog with all the photos for the week published.  I am doing it this way so that each daylily comes up on a couple searches of the blog.  My job entails creating about 20 template emails a day for the following day – it is a lot of looking up progress and pasting from my last note.  Not a creative’s dream.  So, when I save my drafts for the day, I have a blank email to note that it is a new day – and that email is always named after a daylily.  The most creative 5 minutes/day of my job is picking this daylily.  The collages just don’t work.

So – We will start with the newbies.  Primal Scream is in bloom for the 3rd year.  Last year, the blooms were small and anemic.  She is now in an above ground put inside the Walkway Garden.  I hoped for more scapes, but 2 is OK for this year, gives the fall transplant.  Nothing beats her vibrant color.

PrimalScream7.1.3.jpg

Primal Scream 7/1

Indian Giver was a newbie in the Southwest Garden.  She is a small daylily and was a bonus plant 3 years ago.  She only gets a couple buds every year.  She needs to be dug up and put in a buried pot, but the yucca is close, so not sure how I will get this done.  I would like to have more blooms.  She is adorable.

IndianGiver7.1.3.jpg

Indian Giver 7/1

Last but not least, from my Family Garden is Stephanie Returns.  This flower makes my heart sad.  Losing a family member who is still alive is horrid.  Losing several is bitter and cruel.  Please don’t tell people you understand or offer advise while you are surrounded with family.  Please don’t tell people God is giving you this lesson for some reason or other.  Do bookmark this page and come back here and look at this flower and help send positive vibes to anyone in the universe who had ever known the heartbreak such a loss can bring.

StephanieReturns7.1.4.jpg

Stephanie Returns 7/1

OK – Enough heavy stuff.  Onward to the roll call.  Here go the A-Z blooms from 6/25 through today.  Enjoy.

Horses, Canyons, Rodeos, and Our Blooms for the Week!

Summer is here! I got home from camping 6 hours ago and am still trying to get everything done for the weekend!  When I don’t take photos in the morning, the blooms are pretty sunburned by noon.  And we had wind today.   And single digit humidity.  So, for today there were 5 new blooms.

Wild Horses is a favorite, dependable bloomer.  I have had her 3 years and she puts on quite a show.  Can you see the wild horses in her pattern?

WildHorses6.24.1.jpg

Wild Horses 6/24

So, Chaco Canyon bloomed when we returned from this same camping adventure last year.  I love her stripes!

ChacoCanyon6.24.1.jpg

Chaco Canyon 6/24

A brand new face for this year is Navajo Rodeo.  Waiting 3 years to see some of these has taken patience.  She reminds me of Talon, but redder.  I am sure they are related.

NavajoRodeo6.24.2.jpg

Navajo Rodeo 6/24

Ruby Spider is one of my oldest blooms, and always a favorite.  She is huge, and oh so red!

RubySpider6.24.1.jpg

And little Happy Returns is back.  She is such a delicate little yellow trumpet.

So far, that makes 36 that have bloomed in the yard.  Of 170-something.  21% or so of my cultivators have bloomed so far.  Tomorrow, it looks like more new faces will join the count!

The Wild Horses of Mesa Verde are in My Garden

Today, three newcomers!!!  The two mentioned in the title of this post are two of my all-time favorites.  And, believe it or not, neither resides in my Southwest garden.  But they sound like they should.

Wild Horses is a breath-taking bloom because of the striking pattern.  I see the horse in it. Do you?

And, Mesa Verde is striking for her ruffles.  This daylily is amazing to watch bloom.  It takes until nearly noon . . . like waiting for a baby to be born.  Also, notice how the color turns from pink to bright orange.  (4 photos, below)

Lastly, an old friend, Early Bird Cardinal.  It is a sweet red ruffled bloom.

And, for tomorrow . . . I think Stephanie Returns, Pink Enchilada, Inwood.  A couple of my near blues are getting close . . . Bluegrass Music.  Now, there is a story to tell about that one!

Switched at Birth?

I went camping this weekend, so there was one day that I missed my blooms.  I got home today at 4, and rounded the corner to my outside porch.  I start counting blooms, and I spy a new one for the year.  But it is totally the wrong color.  It is mauve and white, I was expecting light yellow.  What’s the deal?

Last year, I planted my two New Mexico named daylilies in the same pot.  I labeled them (I thought).  Last year, Ghost Ranch bloomed.  So, one of the two plants is decidedly larger.  So much so that the smaller one got its own pot to see if I can beef it up a tad.  I thought Ghost Ranch was the one in the big pot.  Apparently not, because the bloom looks like Chaco Canyon.  It is odd, I still can’t figure it out.  Chaco blooms early and Ghost Ranch is later.  So, we will see.  Maybe the fans are mixed now.

Anyway, remember when I said I would only post photos of new blooms?  I have a few today.  Please know that it was 4 PM when I got home so some of the blooms are past their prime.  But, the garden explodes in color.

Tomorrow there are several possibilities for new faces.  I think Wild Horses, Inwood (I missed the first bloom on Saturday), Mesa Verde, Stephanie Returns, Pink Enchilada, and Soco Gap are close.  Any guesses????

Estimated Day of First Daylily: Tomorrow

Stella in half bloomed, so I think it’s safe to say my first daylily of the year shows up tomorrow. I have to give up AM news for camera time in the garden. It’s better, the garden.

I killed my very first Stella a few years back. Then, I got into daylilies, and Stella seemed too common. But they bloom all season. So, last year, I hit the sales and got a few.

I have a growing number of scapes popping up. It’s like watching popcorn start to pop. Kokopelli, Soco Gap, Papa Long legs,  Hopi Jewel, Happy Returns, Ruby Spider, Chama Valley, Strutters Ball,  Wild Horses, Ghost Ranch, Funny Valentine,  Inwood, Jungle Queen, Return A Smile. All have scapes. And, it’s just the beginning.  I guessed Juneteenth (16th) for bloom 1. Off by 9 days. I’m good with it.

I have a lot of friends who think I’m a Lily expert. Daylilies are not really lilies. They are more closely related to Olathe Sweet Corn. And, I hope they do as well in my high desert garden.
