New Faces, Finales, and Roll Call

It is time for Sunday roll call. But first, a couple cool new Roberts Spiders. Meet Mount Echo Sunrise – She is a big spider that reminds me of Dream Catcher. This is her first-ever bloom in my yard – I put her in a couple years ago.

Then there is Sante Fe Christmas – And she looks like a Christmas bow. Red, green with curly petals. I really love her – too bad she lost her other buds. Despite the improved bloom rate, the drought has taken a toll.

Next up – Finales. Of course, Santa Fe Christmas is a finale today 😦

Now, on to our roll call. These are the blooms from 7/9 through today. But, first, we have about 12 with unbloomed scapes remaining and mid-50s with no bloom/no scape. We are at 107 cultivators (+/-). Add 12, and we get close to 120. I am still hoping for 130 total this year.

The Company They Keep

Today brought 40+ blooming cultivators to the yard. The interesting thing is that only two of these were new faces for 2018. It is safe to say it is the peak! One of the things I love about looking at photos of the peak is that there are lots of other flowers in the background of a lot of the photos. It isn’t always other daylilies, either. The daisies and bluebells add interest. (I hate how invasive the bluebells are – the pots are helping.)

So, new blooms are Heron’s Cove. She was added Fall of 2016 and bloomed last year. I had her in the Near Blue section of the Walkway Garden, but she didn’t look that blue. So, I up-potted her and moved her to the NW corner of the house with Mesa Verde, Canyon Colors, and El Desperado. I’ve decided to call it the Garden at Pooh Corner. She looks way bluer to me this year. Maybe it is she gets less sun here. Or, maybe she looks bluer away from the other near blue daylilies.

There was also another tiny bloom from Pooh Corner . . . Purple de Oro. She is such a generic looking mini. I have considered getting rid of her . . . and I had 2 for awhile. But, there is something cute about her petite purple smile.

OK – so it is late and tomorrow is my early work day. And, I leave to camp tomorrow so need to finish packing. There was no internet there last year, so I may not be able to post until Sunday. There will, no doubt, be new faces by then. I am beat . . . need shut-eye. Adding daylilies to my beat-the-clock schedule is rough right now . . . but, I feel it is a positive, too.

Bless the Beasts and the Daylilies

I wonder what life would be like without my puppies and my flowers . . . they add so much that would otherwise be lacking. If I live to be 100, it will be to experience another daylily season.

Today, there were lots of new faces. Interestingly enough, Bluegrass Music is still unbloomed.

Aztec Firebird is a favorite. It is one that has taken off in the Southwestern garden. Very happy, and the blooms are more reddish this year. I have a painting of this one somewhere, I think. First blooms are often a little less showy than the follow-ups, but still pretty cool.

Primal Scream is another favorite – and today I feel a little like a primal scream! It looks a little weathered from the sprinkler and the heat. It was very busy at work today, so I did not get out to take a photo at peak.

I have two that bloomed today that were bonus plants. If you know about buying bare root daylilies, you know about bonus plants. They are fun in the garden. The first one is Longlesson Showoff – it is a first bloom ever in my yard. The second is Pick of the Litter in its second year.

And little Purple de Oro. I have one in a pot and one in the front yard. I was going to give the potted one to my daughter, but it is sort of growing on my where it is. People can see it from the sidewalk when they walk past the house.

I’m not sure about new blooms tomorrow . . . I didn’t get much of a chance to bud count this evening. I did put in a little solar drip system for the two daylilies in pots by the driveway. Hoping for some blooms, but think they may not perform that well this year. It is getting a little late to resuscitate in time for 2017 blooms. But, that’s why I have to hang around until next year . . . every year.

Sweet the Rains New Fall

Cool, rainy weather is welcome after a month of pretty warm weather. Still, I dread the end of daylily season. Summer is the time when I live outdoors. My daylilies get love and attention at some cost to my routine housekeeping duties. And, when it is not daylilies, it is hedge, lawn, veggie garden, or weeds. And, then there is school and the job search. However, arranging my day to increase positive emotion means time with the daylilies . . . broaden and build.

So, today is a low-census day in the daylily garden. The blooms rest as the rain falls. Still, I have baby scapes starting on some . . . like the May ones on most of my plants. Can I extend my bloom for two more months? Until first freeze? We will see . . . always a stretch goal. When it comes to goals, I am a maximizer. Or so say my Gallup strengths.

Praise for the Sweetness of the Wet Garden

The rain came. Finally. Not much monsoon activity this year . . . so the big, cool storm is welcome. I got up reasonably early and several of the flowers had not bloomed all the way. Cool, wet weather. It is a nice break.

I’m two months into this daylily journey 2016. I hope for another two. It won’t peak again, but plateaus are good, too. And, then, comes the paintings. The cool weather and the presence of my granddaughter put me in the mood, a little. Ah, but alas, homework calls. Because the grandkids will be back through Sunday on their way home and due dates loom.

Enjoy the collage for today! This weekend, I am also going to try to sink some of my smaller potted daylilies into the ground. The rain will be good prep for that chore.

Morning Has Broken

Today was an early day in the garden before a hike with my family. I love having my daughter and grandkids in Colorado so I can see them every couple of months. Grandkids are the best blooms of all.

The morning brought two very first blooms to my yard. The first is Nona’s Garnet Spider. Sadly, Nona only produced one viable bud year. (So far – keep hoping!) She was another small root planted last fall. I really like her. I hope Nona brings more buds next trip.

Apache Uprising was also added late fall and was pretty small. I added a couple of intentional late bloomers. It’s a pretty flower.

It was also a day of hiking and swimming, so I am beat. But it is making me smile to have 13 blooms on an August day. My dream is May – October. This year started early June. Let’s see where it ends. (71 blooms so far – so I made my 50% goal.) I have noticed Heirloom Heaven with brand new scapes forming. Plus Tiger Kitten and Frans Hals are growing scapes. I may hit 74. And, who knows, I may have another scape or two join the show.

Peaks and Troughs

In medicine, we draw peak and trough levels after giving some meds. It tells us where the medication reaches its highest and lowest levels. So, yesterday, I got my daylily peak with 26 cultivators in bloom. It’s a high therapeutic level. For me, anyway.

Today, the level dropped off a bit. Only 9. So, I am highlighting my Mexican Daylily (Shell Flower) in the background. Those bulb blooms look like blown glass. Really nice complementary flowers in my yard.

So, some statistics – I have 135 cultivators living in my yard. Fifty-seven of those have bloomed this year, 78 wait in the wings. Most of the new garden will wait until next year, although I am approaching a bloom rate of 20% out there. Who knows what will happen when you turn a rock pile into a garden?

I have some in pots that did less well – much less well – than average. I am not sure what happened to Cheddar Cheese, but all it’s buds fell off. Nosferatu did not bloom, nor did Funny Valentine. Inwood put forth 3 blooms and Strutter’s Ball, only one. Next spring, more water earlier in the season. Because, next year, my goal is 80% bloom rate. Or, bust!

First Frost! (and 26 daylilies)

No, it’s really 88 degrees. It would be warmer if the monsoon clouds weren’t providing some shade. No real rain yet, but cooler than the last few weeks. In fact, cool enough for frost. Well, Lime Frost.

When I arranged daylilies last summer, I put plant labels and entered each location in my software. However, it doesn’t really sink in what is where until they bloom and then you remember to color. So, when I was checking for buds last night, I was surprised that Lime Frost looked full-term. This is booked as a very late season bloomer, but it is still mid-July. Oh, well, we had Desert Icicles so welcome to our delusion of cold weather.

Another brand new face is Autumn Jewel. This was a gift plant – this spring. A later gift plant, even. I love the bloom. It is a relative of El Desperado. It’s slated as another late bloomer. But, here it is anyway.

Fine Time Lucille is another brand new face today. I ordered her last summer when I was first learning the online order thing. The name sold this one . . . I have been humming the song all day.

And, Skinwalker showed up in my Southwestern garden today . . . these first blooms are sometimes a little rough looking. Hoping for more soon from this one!

Of mention is that Electric Lizard, having been fertilized, put in another pale bloom. I now wonder if it has too much sun. I am getting some more fans at a summer sale, as I think it would look better a little fuller.

As peak lingers, I begin to think of next year. I want to do more work with the Southwest garden. Maybe some compost or manure around each plant. Loosen the soil around the roots and add the amendments. That area has been sterile of plants so long, it probably could use some bio additives. Pots, yes, some need to be relocated. Others need pebbles in the bottoms. It will be fun moving them inside the porch this winter – the evergreens. I have had 57 different cultivators bloom so far this year. Next year, 100 by this time! Let’s do it!

The Rainy Season (Monsoons!)

Yesterday, I believe we got our first monsoon of the year. They are a couple weeks late – and I have missed the cooling off effect that they bring to the evening. I am curious to see how the this impacts the blooming.

Today brought 19 cultivators. Two are new – and I mean new, new. They have not bloomed here before; both were added last fall. The first one represents my granddaughter, Maia, in the family section. Her name is Mayan Poppy. I love the pastel colors.

The other one was a small one fan gift plant that I wasn’t sure would make it. And, if it did, I did not anticipate blooms this year. This is Heavenly Curls. As a nurse-midwife, I look at some of these and wonder how they ever bloom without a c-section.

The collage today was kind of fun. I paired like-looking flowers. Some were closer matches than others. Gives it a different look.

Still no news. Thank heaven for my garden. I believe that brings me to 53 blooms for the year. I may just make that mid-60s (50%) goal. Some of my later bloomers are getting scapes! Yea!!!
